A 27-year-old man walked into a police station and allegedly confessed to having murdered his 24-year-old pregnant live-in partner on Saturday.

According to the police, the incident took place at Koregaon village in Shirur teshil, around 60 km from Pune city. Police have arrested the man, identified as Kiran Funde, who is a worker at a private company in a local industrial cluster. The deceased woman, Sonamani Soren, who also worked in a private company, had been in a live-in relationship with Funde for the last few months, as told by the accused to the police.

Police said Funde walked into Ranjangaon police station on Saturday around 6.30 pm in a state of panic and asked the on duty policemen for a blank paper and pen. He wrote on the paper, “I am suffering from depression and have committed a murder. Please hang me.” He handed over the paper to the station duty officer and also gave him a key to the rented room where he lived in Koregaon village along with the address.

A police team rushed to the spot and found a woman lying unresponsive in the corner of the room. She was later declared dead. Subsequently, a case of murder was registered against Funde and he was placed under arrest.

Funde told the police that he and Soren had been in a live-in relationship and recently discovered that she had gotten pregnant. They were having fights over termination of pregnancy. Around 3 pm on Saturday, the two had an argument following which he strangled her to death, Funde told the police. Sub-Inspector Shubhangi Kute of Ranjangaon police station said the complete sequence of events as told by Funde will be probed and the autopsy report of Soren will bring more facts to the fore.
