Former India cricketer Chetan Chauhan succumbs to COVID-19

Chauhan was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi PGI in Lucknow on July 12 after being found Covid positive. His health deteriorated due to kidney-related ailments and he was shifted to Medanta hospital in Gurugram.

Former India cricketer and UP Minister Chetan Chauhan passed away due to COVID-19-related complications on Sunday. He was on life support for nearly 36 hours. His younger brother Pushpendra Chauhan while speaking to PTI said: “My elder brother Shri Chetan Chauhan has left us today after fighting a good battle. I sincerely thank everyone who had prayed for his recovery. His son Vinayak will be reaching anytime and we will then perform last rites.”

PTI reported that Chauhan was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi PGI in Lucknow on July 12 after being found COVID positive. His health deteriorated due to kidney-related ailments and he was shifted to Medanta hospital in Gurugram. He suffered a multi-organ failure and was put on ventilator support on Friday.

As per reports, he breathed his last at a hospital in Gurugram. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the passing away of the former UP Minister and cricketer, UP CM’s Office said.

Chauhan was a BJP MLA from Naugawan Sadat and was currently holding the portfolios of Sainik Welfare, Home Guards, PRD and Civil Security in the Yogi Adityanath government. A two-time Lok Sabha MP from Amroha (1991 and 1998), he is survived by his wife and son Vinayak.

Chauhan, 73, played 40 Tests for India. He also played Ranji Trophy for Maharashtra and Delhi. In June 2016, he was appointed as Chairman of NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology).
