Repeat CBSE tests: Students fear Covid infection, to protest

New Delhi: Divyanshu has been feeling stressed since the announcement by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that the compartment exam will be held in September. He has got a compartment with just one mark in mathematics. He is one of the many students who wants the board to cancel the exam, not because he is unprepared but worried that he may get infected with Covid-19.
“The pandemic situation has changed since July and now, the cases are rising. When Karnataka held an exam recently, several of the candidates tested positive. Does CBSE also want its students to get positive? When students can clear the exams without writing many of the papers, why can’t the board follow the three-subject average formula for us?” asked Divyanshu.
However, Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE controller of examination, said, “Holding of this examination is important else students will lose a year.”
Aakriti argues that they are about to lose a year anyway. “Admissions have already started in the colleges located around the place I live. We don’t know when our exams will be held and when the results will be declared. We are going to lose a year in all probability,” she added.
A total of 87,651 students of Class XII and 1,50,198 students of Class X were placed in the compartment category this year.
Meanwhile, JEE and NEET aspirants have been demanding that their exams scheduled in September be postponed. A case was also filed in the Supreme Court in this regard recently. Some student organisations have supported the demand, saying there cannot be an exam held during the pandemic.
All India Students Association (AISA) has called for a national protest day on Monday. AISA national general secretary, Sandeep Saurav, said: “It is not just about CBSE compartment exams, but also NEET-JEE, CLAT, NDA, UPSC Prelims and many such exams that are being scheduled in the middle of the corona crisis. In the US, opening of schools had resulted in over 97,000 students contracting Covid-19. The situation in India is no different. We demand the government to be sensitive towards the concerns of students.”
AISA, along with 809 student signatories, has already filed a letter petition to the CJI and other judges of the apex court.

Aakriti, another student who has a compartment in one subject, also wants the same formula to be applied for them.
