Mumbai reported 753 new cases and 40 deaths, taking its tally to 1,29,479 and the toll to 7,173. The number of active cases in Mumbai stood at 17,704. Pune city reported 919 new cases along with 26 deaths, pushing up its COVID-19 tally to 80,407 and the toll to 2,077. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region — which covers Mumbai and surrounding towns — reported 2,104 new coronavirus cases, taking its total to 2,89,402. Also, 74 deaths took the total fatalities in the region to 11,614, the official said.

The tally of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai mounted to 1,29,479 on Monday with addition of 753 new cases, which is the second lowest single-day rise so far this month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. With 40 people succumbing to the infection, the toll rose to 7,170, it said.
At 709, the city had reported the lowest single-day rise in cases on August 4. The number of recoveries increased by 833 in the day to 1,04,301, the civic body said. The patient recovery rate in the metropolis has improved to 80 days now, it said, adding that the number of active cases stands at 7,170. (PTI)
Dharavi slum sprawl in Mumbai on Monday added just four new COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 2,672, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said. Of the 2,672 cases, 2,333 patients have already recovered and discharged from hospitals, he said, adding that the slum colony now has only 80 active cases. According to the BMC, the G-north ward that houses Dharavi, Dadar and Mahim areas has a total of 6,921 COVID-19 cases. (PTI)
There has been no case of a recovered patient having been re-infected with the novel coronavirus till now, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has said.
But recovered people can have low levels of the virus in their bodies for up to three months after they were first diagnosed, and this can be detected in the diagnostic tests. This is the reason why there have been instances of recovered people having tested positive again within the three-month period. But such people do not transmit the virus to others, the CDC said in a new guidance released over the weekend.
Pune has now overtaken Mumbai as the city with the maximum number of novel Coronavirus infections in Maharashtra. In fact, after Delhi, it has the highest number of cases in the entire country.
With almost 3,200 new cases being detected on Sunday, Pune now has a little over 1.3 lakh people who have so far been infected with the virus. Mumbai, which has been discovering between 1,000 and 1,200 new cases every day, has about 1.28 lakh people who have been infected. Read more here
The death toll from coronavirus in India crossed 50,000 on Monday, with 941 fatalities in the last 24 hours. As many as 57,982 new cases were reported in the country, taking the tally to 26,47,664. Of the 26 lakh cases, at least 19 lakh have recovered, while over 6.7 lakh are still active. The coronavirus death toll in Maharashtra breached the 20,000-mark on Sunday after 288 patients succumbed to the infection, a state health official said. The state reported 11,111 new positive cases during the day, which pushed its overall tally to 5,95,865, he said. The number of deaths caused by the infection now stands at 20,037, the official said.
A total of 8,837 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery on Sunday, taking the count of such persons to 4,17,123. There are 1,58,395 active cases in the state now, the official added. (PTI)
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said the process of lifting the lockdown in the state would be done in a stepwise manner. The threat of COVID-19 still persists, Thackeray said on Saturday, and added that he does not want a second wave of the deadly viral infection in the state.
The Maharashtra government last month extended the lockdown in the state till August 31. Till Saturday, the state reported 5,84,754 COVID-19 cases and 19,749 deaths due to the disease, as per official figures. It is more important how to lift the lockdown than when to come out of it, Thackeray said in a video interaction with a team of doctors who are part of the task force set up by his government to combat COVID-19.
"Those who hurriedly lifted the lockdown had to impose it again. I dont want a second wave of coronavirus in the state," the chief minister said. "The state government's 'Mission Begin Again' initiative is being implemented step-by-step. The momentum of chase the virus' campaign should not stop since the threat of the virus still persists and monsoon is still active in the state. We have to be careful about rain-related ailments as well," he said.
In a dig at the Narendra Modi government over its push for self-reliance, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday said Russia gave the first lesson to the world on being ‘Aatmanirbhar’ by introducing a COVID-19 vaccine while India has just been preaching about it.
Lauding Russia for the vaccine, Raut, in his weekly column ‘Rokhtokh’ in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, said this was a sign of being a superpower, and added that Indian politicians will not follow Russia’s example as a model since “they are in love with America”.
Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, which was planning to start a 200-bed Covid hospital in Chinchwad on Independence Day, had to postpone its inauguration. The civic administration said that arrival of the oxygen tank had been delayed, which led to the postponement.
India on Sunday recorded 63,489 new cases of coronavirus and 944 deaths, taking the tally to 25,89,682 cases, including 49,980 deaths and over 18 lakh recoveries. Over 60,000 cases have been reported daily since August 7, barring August 11 when the country registered 53,601 new instances of the infection.
