Punjab: Man tries to chop off wife's arm in full public view in Sangrur, gets thrashed by bystanders

PATIALA: A drunkard man not having cordial relations with his wife created panic on Jakhal road in Sunam block of Sangrur district on Sunday morning as he tried to chop off the left arm of his wife with a sickle.
While he inflicted severe injuries on his wife, the bystanders managed to overpower him and thrashed him before the police could arrest him.
Ajaib Singh of Chhajli village tied the arms and legs of his wife Veerpal Kaur and threw her in a modified three wheel cart with motorbike attached in front. He rode to Jakhal road, where he held the sickle in one hand and liquor bottle in the other.
As he created a scene on the road, a number of passersby started assembling there and tried to reason with him in an attempt to convince him to let the woman go.
He however, took the sickle and attacked the woman, threatening the bystanders to stay away.
Even when the police reached the spot, Ajaib Singh challenged the cops and warned them not to come any closer.
By this time the bystanders saw an opportunity and tried to get hold of the accused who started attacking his wife with the sickle, holding her by hair and trying to chop off her hand.
But the bystanders attacked him with sticks and succeeded in saving the woman, who received several injuries on her body, but survived.
Ajaib Singh was then thrashed badly by the people, before the police could take him into custody.
Both the man and his wife were rushed to the government civil hospital at Sunam from where Ajaib Singh had to be referred to government Rajindra Hospital Patiala in view of his condition.
The police said a case under section 307 and 323 of Indian penal code has been registered against Ajaib Singh.
During the preliminary enquiry it has emerged that the husband and wife were not having cordial relations which is being believed to be the reason behind the murderous attack. The police said the matter was being further investigated.
