The new second-generation Thar gets a familiar silhouette and aims to take the legacy of the iconic SUV forward. First, the exteriors! The new 2020 Mahindra Thar looks bigger and much bolder than its predecessor. The overall styling remains familiar and many of you might argue that this one can be a cheaper alternative to the Jeep Wrangler. Prime visual highlights of the new Thar include rounded headlights along with a seven-slot grille up front, chunky alloy wheels, bigger wheel arches and more. The new 2020 Mahindra Thar gets convertible hard-top and optional soft top options.

Now, talking of the interiors, the new 2020 Mahindra Thar does feel a lot upmarket and premium than before on the inside. The new Thar now gets more creature comforts and comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moreover, you get roof-mounted speakers along with a coloured screen for the instrument cluster. In the process of evolving and getting bigger & better, the new Thar gets modern as well as it gets steering-mounted controls and cruise control as well.

Now here comes an interesting part! The new 2020 Mahindra Thar draws power from a 2.0 litre mStallion TGDi Petrol engine along with a 2.2 litre mHawk Diesel engine. Gearbox options for the new Thar include a six-speed manual and for the first time, the true blue off-roader gets an option of a six-speed automatic. While the gasoline motor is good for producing 150 hp of power and 320 Nm of torque, the diesel mill churns out 130 hp and 320Nm.

The new 2020 Mahindra Thar is a treat for the off-road enthusiasts! The SUV gets a 4x4 system as standard along with a manual shift transfer case. The ground clearance has now increased to 226mm and the maximum water wading depth is now 650mm. That said, the Thar looks more capable than before and should certainly be one of the most tempting off-roaders in India at its price point.

In terms of safety features, the new 2020 Mahindra Thar gets ABS + EBD, Dual airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, Hill-hold and hill descent control. Seating options on the SUV include 4 front-facing seats and 2+4 side-facing seats. Once launched, the Thar will be available to choose from in six colour options namely Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Napoli Black, Aquamarine, Galaxy Grey and Rocky Beige.

Unveiled on Independence Day, the new 2020 Mahindra Thar will be launched in India on 2nd October and with this, it is clear that the company is taking an approach to present the Thar as an icon of freedom and a proud Indian vehicle. In terms of the expected price, we are assuming the Thar to make its entry in the market at a starting of close to Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

The all-new Mahindra Thar will be launched in two versions namely AX and LX. While the AX version is targeted at off-road junkies, the LX will attract lifestyle-oriented buyers and hence, comes with more creature comforts. While the AX version gets a fixed soft top along with side-facing rear seats, the more premium LX version offers bits like 18-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a tyre pressure monitoring system as well.
