In years gone by, if you wanted a spacious family car with good luggage space and lived in Europe, you would probably opt for an estate. Oh, how things have changed.

Burgeoning demand for crossovers and SUVs has killed off many estates, which raises the question if there is still a place for them in the modern world. To find out, Autogefühl recently tested out a Peugeot 508 SW and compared it with a DS7 Crossback, an SUV that shoppers may consider over the Peugeot.

As the Peugeot 508 SW and DS7 Crossback both come from the PSA Group, they share a number of components. The 508 SW tested was fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor for a total of 225 hp that’s directed to the front wheels. The DS7 Crossback can be purchased with the same powertrain and front-wheel drive setup, but the one featured combines the 1.6-liter turbo hybrid setup with an additional electric motor at the rear axle, making for a total of 300 hp and all-wheel drive.

When specced with the standard 1.6-liter turbo hybrid, the two are priced virtually the same, making for quite an interesting comparison.

We happen to think that both the Peugeot 508 SW and DS7 Crossback have very appealing designs and arguably look better than their German rivals. It is a similar story in the cabin where the two have very striking and eye-catching interiors.
