Ranchi: On the eve of Independence Day, governor Draupadi Murmu unveiled the new state emblem, approved by the Hemant Soren cabinet recently to showcase the state’s culture, biodiversity, ethnicity and ethos is a more prominent manner.
The programme, a low-key affair owing to Covid-19, was held at Aryabhatta Auditorium in Ranchi’s Morhabadi and attended by chief minister Hemant Soren, his Parliamentarian father Shibu, assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahto and other ministers of the cabinet.
To be officially adopted on Independence Day, the new emblem will replace the old one which was adopted by the first BJP government with Babulal Marandi at the helm since Jharkhand after carved out of Bihar in November 2000.
“The old emblem made no sense and did not represent the attributes of Jharkhand properly,” Soren said.
The new emblem, decked in green, enshrines the national emblem with the etching Satyameva Jayate between concentric circles which represent Jharkhand’s culture, biodiversity and natural resources. It also has the state tribal dance celebration motifs, the Palash flower, also known as the flame of the forest, and elephants. The verdant green colour in the emblem symbolises the greenery of the state blessed with natural beauty and resources.
Elephants symbolise the state's grand past, strength, collective wisdom and resolve to move forward while the Palash flower also reflects the state's natural beauty. The blooming of the flower also indicates arrival of the spring season -- a harbinger of prosperity. The emblem also consists of motifs from Sohrai paintings
In a video message, Hemant said the emblem’s circle shape was designed to represent a wheel, which will represent Jharkhand’s progress in the path of development. “The emblem has been decked in green to represent the state’s rich nature. It also denotes the struggle and sacrifices which the state’s people have made through generations,” Hemant said.
Hemant said: “With abundant natural resources, a vibrant diverse culture and a tribal heritage with it's innumerable tribes, Jharkhand has a unique place in the country. The new emblem reflects vision, renewed vigour and enthusiasm. The government of Jharkhand recognises and celebrates the rich heritage of the state by releasing the state emblem that reflect the ethos of it's people, their ambitions, values, philosophy and culture."
Murmu said the new logo represents Jharkhand’s identity and sense of pride among its people. “The state had an emblem, but perhaps, the government’s idea is to create a new emblem that encompasses all aspects of the state,” Murmu said. Sources in the state government said the new emblem was designed with active participation from the chief minister himself.
