2 more arrested over Telco gang rape case, protests erupt in Steel City

Jamshedpur: Police on Thursday night arrested two more persons accused in the gang rape of a minor girl at Telco Theme Park on Tuesday, taking the number of arrests in the case to five.
On Tuesday, the survivor had gone to the park with Chandan, a friend of hers, on his two-wheeler. Four youths came to the park, thrashed her friend, dragged her to an abandoned hut in a nearby locality and took turns to rape her throughout the night, police said. They later dumped the girl near a railway crossing Govindpur area, where locals found her and helped return home, some 2km away, on Wednesday morning. An FIR was lodged in Birsanagar police station.
The arrested persons include Chandan. City SP Subash Chandra Jat said the others have been identified as Ganesh Bari aka Damru, Sunil Bari aka Govinda, Jasua Savaya aka Motu, Akash Dhal aka Kachim and Chandan Lehra aka Tope have confessed.
Jat said Govinda knew Chandan and used to be close friends and police believe he also had a role in the crime. However, Chandan’s wife said her husband is innocent and the girl often used to call him up over the phone. On August 12, the survivor had called up Chandan and asked him to meet her, his wife said. Police have seized the two-wheeler on which Chandan had taken the girl to the park along with four mobile phones and some clothes.
Meanwhile, scores of women took to the streets on Thursday and Friday to protest against the gang rape of a minor girl at Telco Theme Park on Tuesday. Shouting slogans and burning effigies of the accused, the women demanded a speedy trial and death penalty for the culprits.
On Thursday, BJP’s women’s cell met the girl’s family and assured them of all kinds of support. The cell’s mahanagar head Gunjan Yadav and other party functionaries met SSP M Tamil Vanan and demanded speedy trial in the case.
State BJP spokesperson Kunal Sarangi said it is the duty of the administration to ensure safety and security at all public places. Sarangi, in his tweet to Union minister Smriti Irani, apprised her of the incident and demanded justice for the rape survivor.
Sarangi pointed out that the Theme Park in Telco is often frequented by anti-social elements and Tuesday’s incident reminded him of the gang rape of a newly married woman in front of her husband in 2011 at the same spot.
