UEFA Champions League 2020, Manchester City vs Lyon Highlights: Lyon became the fourth team to be in the UEFA Champions League semifinals after they beat Manchester City 3-1 in a dramatic fashion at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon on Saturday.
After taking an early lead in the 24th minute through Maxwel Cornet, Lyon held on to their lead in the first half. But after a period of domination by City, Kevin de Bruyne equalised in the 67th minute. Just when Pep Guardiola’s men thought they could get the decisive goal, substitute Moussa Dembele scored twice in eight minutes on the counter and drowned out all the hopes of the Manchester-based club.
The Ligue 1 side will play Bayern Munich in the semifinal on Wednesday.
Despite the free-kicks and corners towards the end, City just couldn't make cut the deficit which was so poorly handed to Lyon, especially the third one when Ederson practically gifted the ball to Dembele. But all credit goes to Rudi Garcia and his men, for executing that deep block so well and making the most of the counter-attacks... helping Cornet get the opener and Dembele get the two crucial goals. Now, it's Bayern Munich vs Lyon in the semifinals!
David Silva is on for Rodri. Can the magician pull the rabbit out of his hat again?
LYON IN FRONT AGAIN! Against the run of play, Lyon have reclaimed their lead through their substitute Moussa Dembele who latches on to a free ball and just races ahead of everyone and finishes between Ederson's legs. His first goal of the campaign, and what a time to get it. The final 10 minutes are coming up now. Will we see a major upset again?
Leo Dubois comes off for Kenny Tete and Memphis Depay is replaced by Moussa Dembele. Thiago Mendes is on for Bruno Guimaraes too.
THAT BELGIAN MAGIC AGAIN! Just like City failed to defend a high ball when they conceded in the first half, Lyon do the same to allow City to level. Sterling is released by a brilliant ball from midfield and he races past Denayer on the left wing, cuts back and passes the ball to a sprinting De Bruyne who levels the scores with a hard and low shot past Lopes. Game on!
City have a free-kick about 25 yards out, centre-left, and De Bruyne's dipping free kick is well saved by the outsretched Lopes. City looking promising ever since Mahrez came on, but they still have a long way to go.
Riyad Mahrez comes on for Fernandinho, who was on a booking. Meanwhile, another City corner, another Lyon clearance. Like an endless loop, and oh look... Rodri is booked for a needless challenge on Bruno Guimaraes. Frustration?
It has been a rather uneventful start to the second half but there's a notable change though for City -- De Bruyne is playing much higher up the pitch in a Number 10-ish role. City still looking for the equaliser though.
All credit to Lyon for opening the scoring and holding on to the lead responsibly with their deep block system. Pep Guardiola should be wary of his opposition now as Lyon have never lost a match against an English club having opened the scoring (W5 D5). Maybe a change in system will help them? Maybe resorting back to a 4-3-3 will help break down Lyon? Who knows?
City threaten again after Jesus releases Sterling to the right. The winger cuts back and passes it to Rodri in the centre of the box but his shot is tamed properly by Lopes. Lyon holding on to their lead very, very dearly.
Almost an entire half of football and City have just managed two shots. De Bruyne from a free-kick recently. Lyon's deep block has negated the passing play of City, nullifying the threat of De Bruyne. But the question is for how long can they continue it?
Ever since the goal, City have looked for chances especially through De Bruyne but all to no avail. The deep block of Lyon's three-man defence and three-man midfield is proving to be really effective to keep out the attacking plethora of City.
THAT MAN AGAIN! After Marcal plays a long ball from the left-side of the defence, Toko Ekambi chases the ball as Ederson rushes out... but in a twist in the tale, Garcia's tackle lets the ball in the direction of the incoming Cornet who confidently places the ball from outside of the box to the lower-left corner. Guardiola is shocked. Lisbon is shocked.
The teams are just passing around but both of them have failed to successfully threaten the goal or even the box. Lyon are really playing on their frontfoot though as their constant pressing is proving to be a problem for City.
Leo Dubois picks up the first booking because of a late tackle on Joao Cancelo.
Lyon have a go at goal too as centre-back Marcal has a fierce left-footed shot from a corner routine saved by Ederson. The play restarts with City on the ball again.
City are visibly playing the same system as Lyon as Gaurdiola has gone with a back three here with Fernandinho, Garcia and Laporte as the centre-backs. Walker and Cancelo are on the either wing, with De Bruyne and Sterling infront of them.
