Former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has announced retirement from international cricket
Mahendra Singh DhoniFormer captain of the Indian cricket team Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday announced retirement from all formats of international cricket. He last played in the semifinal of 2019 World Cup. “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired,” he posted on his official Instagram account.
He captained the India national team in ODIs from 2007 to 2016 and in Test cricket from 2008 to 2014. Dhoni is considered one of the most successful captains of World Cricket. He is the only captain in the history of Cricket to win all ICC trophies. It was under his captaincy that India won two World Cups — 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup
The BCCI said that “he boy from Ranchi, who made his ODI debut in 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanour, sharp understanding of the game and astute leadership qualities”. In a detailed post, the BCCI said that Dhoni is also among the most successful captains in world cricket. “It was under his leadership that India lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 after having led India to triumph in the ICC World T20 in its maiden edition of the tournament held in 2007 in South Africa. With India winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 in England, Dhoni became the first and is still the only captain till date to have won all three ICC Trophies,” it said.
The board further added that it was under his leadership that India became the No 1 Test side in 2009 and the team stayed at the top for over 600 days. Dhoni has led India to victory in 21 home Test matches, the most by an Indian captain. Dhoni also holds the record for most international matches as captain (332). “Unarguably the quickest man behind the wicket, Dhoni has 195 international stumpings, the most by any wicket-keeper,” the BCCI said.
Last year when he was asked about his retirement plan, Dhoni had said: “January tak mat poocho (Don’t ask me till January).” The speculation about his retirement had grown after he opted out from West Indies and the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh.
