Child rescued from burning North Fitzroy housing commission building

A child has been rescued from a burning North Fitzroy building and residents are being evacuated after a third-storey apartment of a housing commission building erupted in flames on Saturday.

A man was seen hanging out his second-floor window calling for help as firefighters searched the building for trapped residents.

Many of the residents escorted from the building, on the corner of Nicholson St and Clauscen St, appear to be elderly.

A local shopkeeper, who did not wish to be named, said he saw a firefighter sprint out of the burning building carrying a young child of about four years of age.
