Record 413 deaths in a day take Maharashtra's toll past 19,000

MUMBAI: Maharashtra reported 413 Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, its highest toll for a day, taking the total fatalities to 19,063. The most deaths reported in a day earlier were 390 on August 9.
The state attributed Thursday’s jump in fatalities to its data-cleaning exercise. It said of the 413 deaths, 288 were from the last 48 hours, 74 from last week and the other 51 from the period before that. The state added 11,813 fresh cases, taking its total tally to 5,60,126. Mumbai added 1,200 or 10.1% of the cases on Thursday.

Mumbai toll increases by 48, now only nine short of 7,000
The city added 1,200 or just 10.1% of the state’s 11,813 Covid-19 cases for Thursday. The total caseload of Mumbai now stands at 1,27,556, and with the addition of 48 deaths, the city’s total toll is 6,991, very close to the 7,000 mark. A senior civic official said that wards would soon be given testing targets to boost detection of cases. The city is now carrying out nearly 9,000 tests every day, officials said.

Pune division on Thursday recorded the highest cases (3,034) and deaths (118) in the state, while MMR, excluding Mumbai, added 2,195 cases and 92 deaths.
Senior state officials said the number of cases going up is not a cause for concern as much as the increase in the deaths and the case fatality rate, which is 3.4% for the state and 5.5% for Mumbai.
Within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Kalyan-Dombivli reported 330 new patients and 9 deaths on Thursday, taking the total number of patients there to 23,547, with 475 deaths having been reported so far.
On Thursday, 309 patients also got discharged in Kalyan-Dombivli, taking the total discharges there to 18,870, while 4,202 active patients are still taking treatment.
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation on Thursday also launched its ‘Mission Zero’ Covid patients campaign in the twin city, under which the civic body, with the help of NGOs like the Bharatiya Jain Sangh and MCHI-Kalyan, has launched 10 vehicles that will travel door-to-door to ensure maximum antigen tests.
There were 317 cases from within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation areas, taking the total count there to 19,757. Of these, 15,768 patients have recovered. NMMC officials also said that seven deaths were reported on Thursday, taking the toll to
493. The Panvel City Municipal Corporation reported 189 Covid positives and 10 deaths, so the total positive tally there is now 8,773 and the deaths have gone up to 215.
Panvel rural added 54 positives and one death, taking the final tally of positives there to 2,598. The total death count in Panvel rural is now 54.
Uran taluka reported 36 positives and four more deaths. The total positives in this taluka moved up to 1,075 while the overall death toll there now stands at 48.
In Thane city, 193 fresh cases were reported on Thursday, taking the overall tally of patients there to 21,891 while eight deaths were reported, taking the toll to 721.
A total of 9,115 people were discharged on Thursday in Maharashtra, taking the total discharges to 3,90,958 and taking the recovery rate to 69.8%.
