COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police will deploy 950 police personnel during the Independence Day celebration on Saturday.
Around 50 Covid-19 frontline workers will be honoured by district collector K Rajamani during the event. However, the public will not be allowed to participate in the celebration.
Security has been beefed up in the view of the celebration across Coimbatore. The event will be held at the VOC park ground on Saturday at around 8.50am. The district collector will hoist the national flag and accept the guard of honour.
The Coimbatore city police took control over the park over five days ago. On Friday evening, Sindhu, a sniffer dog, and the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) team were pressed into service to thoroughly check the ground. Police teams have also been deployed at the ground for round the clock for protection.
Coimbatore city police commissioner Sumit Sharan said around 950 and 900 police personnel will be deployed across the city and rural areas respectively for security on Saturday.
Due to the pandemic, the cultural programmes usually performed by students have been cancelled.
“Around 50 bureaucrats are expected to participate in the celebration,” said an official. Police personnel to be on vigil at the inter-state borders and all the police officials will be engaged with bundobust till Saturday evening.
