The all-new VW Golf 8 GTI has arrived (in Europe) and in this POV video, we get our first look at what it is like to drive the hot hatch, more than a year before it arrives in the USA as a 2022MY in late 2021.
Like the previous-generation Golf GTI, the new model is powered by the company’s EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 242 hp and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. These are the same figures as the Mk7 Golf GTI Performance but are still well below the horsepower and torque ratings of other front-wheel drive hot hatches.
Shoppers can buy the new GTI with either a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or a six-speed manual. The reviewer in this clip was testing the six-speed and was able to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.3 seconds while hitting 124 mph (200 km/h) in 22.1 seconds. While testing out the rolling acceleration, the car needed 15.5 seconds to go from 62 mph to 124 mph.
During the video, the reviewer adds that the new Golf GTI sounds surprisingly nice and offers up some pops and bangs from the exhaust, adding to the driving experience and making it that little less Germanic.
From a visual standpoint, the new Golf GTI tries to differentiate from lesser variants thanks to a new lower front grille with a honeycomb mesh and optional X-shaped LED fog lights. The hatch also receives a new rear bumper, black side skirts, unique alloy wheels, a roof spoiler, and dual tailpipes. Few changes have been made to the cabin and are limited to a sports steering wheel, some trimmings of red and silver, and signature tartan sports seats.
