"A 47-year-old man was stabbed several times and has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition," they said. "The investigation is ongoing."

It follows an earlier assault at the neighbouring medium-security Marngoneet Correctional Centre where a man, believed to be aged in his 30s, suffered a head injury during an assault about 12.30pm on Friday.

Paramedics said the man was taken to a Melbourne hospital for treatment.

Corrections Victoria has been contacted for comment.
