BSF gets rare toucan bird on Bangladesh border, price Rs 15 lakh

Acting on intelligence information on the Bangladesh border, when the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel arrived, the suspects present there fled by throwing a cage. There was a pair of rare toucan birds in the cage which cost around 15 lakh rupees. It is a rare bird that is also the national bird of the Central American country Belize. Smugglers were taking these precious birds to Bangladesh. This species is found in tropical forests from southern Mexico to Colombia. The price of these birds in the international market is around 15 lakh rupees. Both the seized birds have been handed over to the Zoological Garden in Alipur, Kolkata.

Acting on intelligence information on 13 August 2020, BSF jawans conducted a special search operation in the areas around the jungle behind the village of Haldar Para near the international border. The village falls in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. At around 6.45 am, the soldiers saw two suspicious people hiding behind bamboo bushes in the inner part of the forest. As the soldiers tried to reach him, the suspects suddenly ran towards the Indian village. A cage was also taken with him during the escape. When the soldiers chased them, they managed to escape by throwing the cage there and taking advantage of the dense forest.



The search party then conducted a thorough search of the area around the forest in which a cage was found. Inside the cage was a pair of unusual-looking birds known as toucan birds. The seized birds belong to the nail-billed toucan species also known as sulfur-breasted toucan or rainbow-billed toucan. It is a colorful Latin American member of the Toucan family. Toucan is found mostly in the tropical forests of southern Mexico and Colombia.
