Tamil Nadu govt sets up panel to study draft EIA

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Friday set up a 12-member state-level committee to look into all aspects of the draft environment impact assessment notification, 2020.
This follows an announcement made by chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami during his visit to Tirunelveli last week.
“The committee’s mandate is to analyse the merits and demerits of the notification and submit recommendations to the government as soon as possible,” said a senior official.
Additional chief secretary to the environment and forests department has been named chairperson of the committee, while chairman of the state pollution control board, member secretary of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, commissioner of municipal administration, chief engineer of public works department, director of geology and mining are the members representing government. The member-secretary of State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority is the member secretary of the committee.
S Chandramohan, chairman of CII, Tamil Nadu, Jayashree Venkatesan of Care Earth, a non-government organisation, Ramesh of National Centre of Sustainable Coastal Management, T Sekar, former member secretary of pollution control board and Thangavelu, former chairman of state level environment impact assessment authority are the other members.
The Union government has proposed EIA Notification 2020 to replace EIA Notification 2006. The draft notification was put up in the public domain on March 12 to seek views from all the stakeholders within a period of 60 days. However, the Delhi high court directed the Centre to publish the draft in all 22 official languages. The Karnataka high court directed the Centre not to publish the draft until September 7.
