Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp is "quite sure" his charges will use the positives of their 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits as motivation going forward.

Despite the result, the title chasing Glamour Boys remain log leaders with a four-point gap ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who were held to a goalless draw against Orlando Pirates at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday.

Chiefs, who play their remaining home matches at Orlando Stadium, played their first match in four months on Wednesday after the season was halted in mid-March due to Covid-19.

Football returned over the weekend with the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) rolliing out a highly restricted and government approved biological safe environment (BSE) to complete the 2019/20 season in Gauteng.

In their first match experience in the bio-bubble, Middendorp opted to defend his team's performance.

"It was our first game in five months," the Chiefs coach told SuperSport TV after the final whistle.

"I think I we messed it up in certain moments in the first half. Sometimes when we counter-attacked, when we had this transition... say four against three or five against three... we have to make more out of it. I think that is the dilemma we have to discuss."

"I think absolutely let me use the words of another coach in the PSL... it's Wits... Wits are a good team. We took a point. Here under the circumstances... it's another seven games to go. We have to be alert in every moment. Games against each team in this remaining three weeks will be the same. Everyone will be fighting for various positions in the league."

Chiefs have six matches remaining and Middendorp is confident that his side will improve as the race to the title heats up against rivals Sundowns.

"The games against each team in these remaining three weeks will be the same. There is a fight, there is a spirit. Everyone is fighting for something, stay in the league, fighting for winning the championship. Fighting for a position in the top eight," Middendorp continued.

"It is something like this. I'm quite sure that with the potential we have... this transition... opportunities, going in five against three, we will do better. I'm quite sure. You can push it nicely in training sessions, but the game is different."

Amakhosi next face Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.
