Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt is gearing up for her upcoming film Sadak 2, co-starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur. The film also marks her first collaboration with her filmmaker father Mahesh Bhatt, who is returning as a director after two decades. His last directorial was the Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala starrer Kartoos. Sadak 2 is a sequel to the 1991 hit romantic thriller Sadak, which also starred Pooja Bhatt and Sadashiv Amrapurkar in the popular character of Maharani, the eunuch madam of a brothel. The makers of Sadak 2 dropped its trailer recently, giving us a hint that the plot is a revenge drama against a godman, and Pooja Bhatt is presumably dead. The godman here is played by Makarand Deshpande, who tries to step into the shoes of Amrapurkar and looks unrecognisable in his new avatar. While Dutt is seen reprising his role as a taxi driver from the original film, Alia and Aditya are lovers who rent his services, until the trio strike a bond against the common enemy. Produced by Vishesh Films, Sadak 2 will premiere on August 28 on Disney Plus Hotstar VIP.

During a recent virtual press conference, Alia spoke about Sadak 2. The actor said, “The journey of Sadak began with three people – Mahesh Bhatt, Pooja Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt. Aditya (Roy Kapur) and I are newbies in this Sadak universe. This film is way more than a film for me because this is homecoming in its true sense. The entire family has got together to make this film and hence the emotions were at a different level all together.” She added, “It’s a continuation and not a recreation of the already existing Sadak. Ravi’s journey goes forward, and he meets two new people. Sadak 2 is the road to love and has different love stories. There’s also a thrill to it because Maharani was a very iconic villain of that time. Even this time, the villain is very different. It’ll be totally unexpected. Also, when I was a kid, I used to be so excited about the songs in my father’s films. I would dream about me featuring in his songs. That came true. Today I can proudly say that I have become a small part of the Bhatt camp’s songs.”

The first poster of Sadak 2 featured a picturesque click of Mount Kailash, without any actors. Speaking on why the team chose to do that, Alia Bhatt shared some words which her father Mahesh Bhatt had written – “When we had the conversation about our first communication, this is what my father said, ‘I want the road, and I want Kailash mountain at the end of the road.’ Kailash has a significance in our film. When I asked him what am I supposed to tell people if they ask me where the film’s characters are, he told me to say this – ‘Mount Kailash, the ageless mountain has the footprints of gods and sages. It is the abode of the god of all gods – Lord Shiva. So do we really need anything else or actors in that sacred space? Since the beginning of time, humanity found its shelter in Kailash. This is the place where all search ends. Sadak 2 is the road to love. The sequel of Sadak will take you on the mother of all love pilgrimages.’”

Alia's Takht stalled?

Reports suggest that Karan Johar's ambitious project Takht, starring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar, will now be delayed by at least a year.

Karan had announced the project in 2018, but now it has hit a roadblock due to the coronavirus pandemic. A source close to the project tells us, “Karan was almost prepared to start shoot for Takht, but the coronavirus outbreak happened. The film is quite grand and needs a huge number of people on set which won't be possible due to restrictions while filming during the pandemic. So Karan has decided to keep this film on the back burner and focus on another project instead.”

Ishq Kamaal is my original composition: Suniljeet

Sadak 2 is facing yet another hurdle. A Pakistani music producer Shezan Saleem took to Twitter and shared a video pointing out the similarities between Sadak 2's Ishq Kamaal and his 2011 song Rabba Ho, sung by Zaid Khan.

Saleem tweeted: "@foxstarhindi What do we do about this. Copied from a song that I produced in Pakistan and launched in 2011. Let's talk guys."

Sadak 2 music composer Suniljeet has refuted the allegation.

He said in a statement, "'Ishq Kamaal' is my original composition and doesn't share resemblance to any other song. Everybody involved in making this song including singer Javed Ali has added his magic to the music. This is my debut as a music director and all I hope for is that people like the song when it comes out. Shalu Vaish and I have worked with all our heart to live up to the expectation of Sadak 2 music”.

Alia Bhatt's Sadak 2 trailer evokes mixed reaction

The trailer of Sadak 2, starring Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur, was released on Wednesday.

Within hours of its release, the trailer of Sadak 2 managed to become the number 1 trending video and the most down-voted video in India.

Sadak 2 might be one of the biggest projects releasing on a digital platform due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the film has already faced its share of roadblocks and controversy. Owing to Mahesh Bhatt's name getting popped up in the Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide case, fans of SSR have began an online trend to boycott Sadak 2 in support of the late actor. This has left Alia Bhatt and the remaining cast and crew at the receiving end of online trolling and hate. Many have even started a petition against all the star kids including Alia. This is because Alia was launched by Karan Johar, who is under the scanner in Sushant's case.

On the brighter side, Alia is among the 819 people who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Those who accept the membership will have voting privileges at the 93rd Academy Awards which will be held on April 25, 2021. Alia took to Instagram to share how "honoured and humbled" she is on getting the invitation. "I thank The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for inviting me to be a member of the Academy. I feel at once honoured and humbled," Alia wrote. She further added, "There is also a deep satisfaction in seeing that the voice of Indian cinema is finding a very well deserved platform on the world stage. Every year, more actors, filmmakers and technicians from India are recognized by the Academy and Indian cinema continues to reach the hearts and homes of people all over the world." Ali also wrote, "She concluded, “In a world that can be unsure and fragmented, at a time when the very social media that is meant to connect people ends up dividing them, movies are the glue that binds us."

Alia Bhatt also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi and Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra in her kitty. Brahmastra also stars Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy. The big-budget action fantasy film is backed by Dharma Productions. Brahmastra is the part one of the trilogy franchise which is being made in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. It was previously set to release on August 2019. It got postponed to Christmas 2019, and further to December 2020. Due to the spread of coronavirus, it is unsure whether Brahmastra will now release on its stipulated schedule.
