Victoria has recorded 278 new coronavirus cases in the past day, and a further eight people have been killed by the virus.

According to figures released by the Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday morning, the daily case increase - now below 300 - marks a significant drop from the record high of 725 new cases recorded last week.
