ERODE: A 25-year-old man was buried alive in Erode city on Thursday while digging a pit for an underground drainage system.
The deceased has been identified as S Anand, 24, of Lakkapuram area in Erode. He worked as a contract labourer for the Erode Municipal Corporation.
Inspector of Surampatty police station S Manikandan said Anand was digging a 10-foot-deep pit in Marapalam area on Thursday evening. While doing so, a part of the soil collapsed and fell into the pit burying Anand.
Fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot. After a two-hour struggle, they retrieved Anand’s body.
"Doctors checked Anand and confirmed that he was dead," the inspector added.
The body was sent to a Government Hospital in the city for postmortem.
The Surampatty police registered a case.
