Gujarat: One more Surat Civic body employee succumbs to Covid-19

SURAT: One more employee of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) succumbed to Covid-19 on Thursday afternoon. According to SMC officials, the 53-year-old personnel was a sanitary inspector in Amroli ward in the city.
"He was admitted to SMC-run SMIMER Hospital after he was tested positive for Covid-19 on August 10. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital where he died on Thursday. The employee is survived by his 70-year-old Mother, wife, a son and a daughter. His daughter is studying in an ayurvedic college and son is studying in Vadodara,'' said an SMC official.
Earlier on 10 August, three SMC employees had died due to Covid-19. Since May 19, about 16 employees of the SMC have died of which 12 succumbed to Covid-19 infection.
Surat city reported 181 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday. Highest daily cases were reported from Katargam zone at 47 followed by 35 in Rander, 26 in Athwa, 17 in Central, 16 each in Limbayat and Udhna, 12 in each Varachha (A) and Varachha (B) in the city.
With 16 fresh cases, Udhna zone now has over 1,016 total Covid-19 cases and all the eight civic zones have over 1,000 cases.
According to Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials, four Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Surat rural reported 70 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday taking the total number of cases to 3,362 in the district. One Covid-19 patient succumbed to the virus on Thursday taking the toll to 154 in the district.
