CRPF to launch organ donation drive on Aug 14
- The country's largest paramilitary force, CRPF, will launch a mega campaign to raise awarness about organ donation amongst its about 3.25 lakh personnel on Friday, officials said.

Nasscom on exemptions in US visa ban
- Nasscom said it is "cautiously optimistic" about the exemptions offered in the H-1B and L-1 travel ban and the development will help US businesses access talent critical for economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 world.
- The industry body said there are caveats in the US Department of State's guidance about seniority, unique and significant contributions and other factors that go along with the exceptions that allow leeway in interpretation of the new guidance. Its impact can only be gauged in course of time.
India's $ 500 million assistance to the Maldives
- India will fund the implementation of a major connectivity project in Maldives through a $400 million line of credit and $100 million grant.
- The 6.7 km Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP) will be the largest civilian infrastructure project in Maldives, connecting Male with three neighbouring islands -- Villingili, Gulhifahu and Thilafushi, officials said.
MSCI downgrades Airtel on wrong data
The index service provider reduced telco’s weight from 3.5 per cent to 1.8 per cent in MSCI India index and from 0.285 per cent to 0.144 per cent in MSCI EM Index.

As per a Macquarie report circulated in the media, MSCI picked incorrect information from the NSDL website about the FDI limit in the company.
Bharti Airtel told exchanges in June that it had received government approval to increase foreign ownership in the company by 100 per cent. Earlier this limit stood at 74 per cent.
The NSDL website still mentions the limit as 49 per cent via the automatic route.

- Social media platforms stepped up fight against misinformation on the U.S. elections, with Facebook starting a hub to help users with poll-related resources and Twitter expanding rules against misinformation on mail-in ballots and early voting.
- The move comes as online social networks have been drawing flak for what has been called a lax approach to fake news reports and misinformation campaigns, which many believe affected the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
- Twitter's move will involve coming up with new policies "that emphasize accurate information about all available options to vote, including by mail and early voting."

- Japanese two-wheeler major Yamaha on Thursday said it has launched its online sales in India responding to changes in customer behaviour in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
- In the current scenario, customers prefer staying indoors and wish to minimise their visit to the showroom.
- Considering the convenience of the customers, India Yamaha Motor has introduced the online sales on its website with ‘Virtual Store' to enhance the buying experiences of its customers, the company said in a statement.

Number of unemployed people in Australia exceeds 1 million for first time
- The number of unemployed people in Australia has increased by some 16,000 between June and July, and has surpassed 1 million for the first time on record, head of the Labour Statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Bjorn Jarvis said on Thursday.
- The unemployment in Australia is increasing amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
- "The number of unemployed people rose by nearly 16,000 between June and July. For the first time, there were more than one million people out of work, available to work and actively looking for work," Jarvis said, as quoted by the ABS.

Deposit Rs 50L environment damage compensation with DPCC: HC to DDA
- The Delhi High Court has directed land owning agency, DDA, to deposit with pollution control body, DPCC, the environment damage compensation of Rs 50 lakh imposed on it for alleged water contamination of storm water drains on the Samalkha-Dwarka Road here.
- Justice Navin Chawla directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to deposit the amount with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) within two weeks from August 10 and added that the deposit would be subject to outcome of the plea moved by the land owning agency against the environment damage compensation imposed on it.
- The court also issued notice to DPCC, represented by Biraja Mahapatra, and sought its stand on the DDA's plea within four weeks.
Rhea Chakraborty, Bihar govt file written submissions in SC
- Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty and the Bihar government filed their written submissions in the Supreme Court on Thursday on Chakraborty's plea seeking to transfer an FIR lodged against her in Patna in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death to Mumbai.
- Seeking the dismissal of Chakraborty's petition, the Bihar government, in its written submissions filed through advocate Keshav Mohan, said, "No impediment would deserve to be allowed to come in the way of CBI to undertake and complete the investigation expeditiously."
- In her written submission, Chakraborty said the transfer of the probe to the Centreal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the behest of the Bihar police was without jurisdiction.

Zydus Cadila launches COVID-19 drug Remdesivir in India
- Drug firm Zydus Cadila on Thursday said it has launched Remdesivir under the brand name Remdac, used to treat patients suffering from severe symptoms of COVID-19, in the Indian market.
- Priced at Rs 2,800 per 100 mg vial, Remdac is the most economical Remdesivir brand in India, Zydus Cadila said in a regulatory filing.
- The company said the drug will be made available across India through the group's strong distribution chain reaching out to government and private hospitals treating COVID-19 patients

- A spell of continuous rain drenched Delhi on Thursday, inundating parts of the city, and more is in store, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
- According to the IMD, the Palam observatory recorded 86 mm rainfall till 5:30 am and the Safdarjung weather station gauged 42.4 mm rainfall.
- Rainfall recorded below 15 mm is considered light, between 15 and 64.5 mm is moderate and above 64.5 mm is heavy, according to the IMD.
Israel launches fresh strikes on Hamas targets in Gaza
- Israel's military said Thursday it had carried out fresh overnight strikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, in response to incendiary balloons launched across the border from the Palestinian enclave.
- The latest round of hostilities has seen firebombs attached to bunches of balloons floating into Israel, setting scrubland ablaze. Sometimes kites are used in the makeshift attacks.
- In response, Israel has closed a goods crossing with Gaza and slashed the territory's permitted coastal fishing zone, as well as launching air strikes on sites owned by the enclave's Islamist rulers Hamas.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the platform for "Transparent Taxation - Honoring the Honest" via video conferencing on Thursday (today) at 11 AM.
- According to a release of Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has carried out several major tax reforms in direct taxes in recent years.
- Last year, the Corporate Tax rates were reduced from 30 per cent to 22 per cent and for new manufacturing units, the rates were reduced to 15 per cent. Dividend distribution tax was also abolished.
Florida sheriff bans face masks among officers
- A Florida sheriff ordered his officers to not wear face masks -- and banned the safety gear from his office -- even as the southern US state has hit record daily coronavirus death tolls.
- Sheriff Billy Woods, of central Florida's Marion County, emailed deputies Tuesday to tell them of the new mask prohibition, according to local paper the Ocala Star Banner, citing the message.
- "My order will stand as is when you are on-duty/working as my employee and representing my Office - masks will not be worn," the email read.
After Bengaluru violence, Hyderabad CP alerts officials to monitor derogatory social media posts
- In the wake of the Bengaluru violence, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police (CP) Anjani Kumar alerted officers and the City Police's social media unit to monitor and update senior officers on any derogatory posts.
- Kumar held a video conference with all senior police officers following the violence in Bengaluru.
- "In case of any exigency, the response time should be less than 10 minutes to reach the spot," he said, adding that all senior officers should arrive at the spot and utilise all available resources to keep the situation under control and peaceful.
23 companies attend Railways' meet for running private trains
- A total of 23 companies, including some PSUs shown interest in operating private trains in the country as they participated in the second pre-application conference for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in passenger trains project organised by the Ministry of Railways on Wednesday.
- In the meeting, which was held virtually, Railway Board Members along with NITI Ayog officials answered the queries raised by the private players during the pre-bid meeting.

- Wind and solar produced a record 10 percent of global electricity in the first half of 2020 as the world's coal plant fleet ran at less than half its capacity, analysis published Thursday showed.
- Despite a near-record drop in power demand due to the pandemic, renewables accounted for 1,129 terawatt-hours in January-June, compared with 992 in the first six months of 2019, according to a report by the Ember energy think tank.
- Overall, the percentage of power drawn from wind and solar has more than doubled from 4.6 percent in 2015 -- the year of the landmark Paris deal on climate change.
Biden raises USD 26M in 24 hours after VP announcement
- Joe Biden raised USD 26 million for his presidential campaign in the 24 hours that followed his announcement that California Senator Kamala Harris would be his running mate.
- Biden's campaign said Wednesday that the sum more than doubled the campaign's previous record. It also received contributions from more than 150,000 new donors.
- Harris is expected to play a prominent role in fundraising for the campaign.
No human pyramids in Mumbai's 'Lord Krishna' festival due to coronavirus
- There were no human pyramids in Mumbai's Janmashtami festival celebrating Lord Krishna on Wednesday, which normally attracts thousands onto the streets, due to a surge in coronavirus in India, with more than 60,000 cases reported in 24 hours.
- "This year, the celebration will be symbolic," said Ram Kadam, a state lawmaker who organises one such celebration in Mumbai.
- "We will just have posters cheering on doctors and nurses, and will pray to the Lord to help us overcome this pandemic.
Mainland China reports 19 new cases
- China reported 19 new coronavirus cases on the mainland on Aug. 12, down from 25 on the previous day, the country's health authority said on Thursday.
- The National Health Commission said in its daily bulletin that 11 of the new cases were imported, versus 16 a day earlier.
- It also said 20 new asymptomatic coronavirus cases had been found on Wednesday, the same as the day before.
