Online admission: Pune University receives 20 applications per seat for under and post graduate courses this year

Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has received over 27,787 applications for admission to various courses for which only 5,659 seats are available. This means more than 20 students have applied per seat for under and postgraduate courses of SPPU.

Among all the courses, the science and technology course has been most popular with SPPU receiving 17104 applications for 1342 seats available for this course. This means 8 students will compete with each other for each seat in these courses.

Pune University has announced admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the academic year 2020-21. In view of the Covid-19 outbreak in the city, it was expected that less number of students would apply for admissions to courses in the SPPU this year. Contrary to this anticipation, SPPU has confirmed 27,787 applications against an intake of 5,569 available seats across the streams and levels. This is the second year of an online admission process being implemented by the SPPU. The last date of filling up the application forms was on August 10.

SPPU officials said, “We were wary of the Covid-19 crisis and subsequent lockdown and expected a dip in the admissions especially those from outside Pune city. But we had crossed the 25 thousand mark on July 22 itself and now the total confirmed applications are 27787. These applications are for taking admission to degree and certificate courses including 96 subjects offered by its 53 departments.”

“This increase in applications can be due to restrictions of international travels due to Covid-19 and several parents fearing the Covid-19 situation in foreign universities,” the official claimed.

The entrance test of one-hour duration for Bachelor of Vocational (B. Voc), BA Liberal Arts, Music, Dance, Drama, B Tech Aviation and other degree courses will be held on August 16. The entrance test date for diploma courses will be declared soon.
