Coronavirus India Updates: Tally Tops 22.6 Lakh; Over 45,000 Dead
Coronavirus infections in India raced ahead with the country adding at least half a lakh cases everyday since two weeks now.
India added more than 53,000 cases in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total tally to 22.6 lakh in the world’s third-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Aug. 11. This includes over 45,200 deaths and more than 15.8 lakh patients who have recovered.
The 53,601 fresh cases, though still high, are lower than the 60,000 odd cases reported everyday for the last four days. Today additional cases are the lowest in six days.
Key figures:
- Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 22,68,675
- Active cases: 6,39,929
- Cured/discharged/migrated: 15,83,489
- Deaths: 45,257
- Fresh cases in 24 hours: 53,601
- One-day recoveries: 47,746
- One-day deaths: 871
While India has added over 8 lakh cases in the last 15 days, the rate of recoveries is also on the rise. Recovered cases are now more than double that of active cases. This, however, is not necessarily an indication that the country has hit its peak.
Global Update
Coronavirus infections topped 20 million, the latest sobering milestone as the pandemic wreaks havoc across the globe. While it took six months after the virus first surfaced in China to reach 10 million infections, the spread has steadily accelerated, doubling in six weeks.
Nursing-home outbreaks are lifting death rates in Hong Kong and Australia. In the U.S., which accounts for a quarter of all cases, hard-hit states including New York, California and Texas reported falling hospitalisations, helping American health-care systems get a reprieve.

Free Smartphones To Be Distributed On Aug 12 In Punjab
The Punjab government said Monday it will start distributing smartphones to students for free on August 12.
To avoid large gatherings, the launch of the distribution scheme will be organised at 26 different locations in Chandigarh and Punjab. All district headquarters and some major towns will be covered on this day.
"Not more than 15 students studying in that town/district will be invited at each location for handing over the smartphones, said a government statement.
The state government had already announced to give smartphones to all boys and girls studying in Class 12 of the government schools across the state. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the government has chosen the auspicious occasion of 'Janmashtami' to launch the scheme.
Coincidentally, Aug. 12 is also the International Youth Day, he said.
Singh said the state government would fulfil its promise to people by providing them smartphones, adding these phones will be extremely helpful to the youth in accessing information as well as other learning material posted by the department of school education.
The state government received the first consignment of 50,000 smartphones and the remaining was in the pipeline. In the first phase, around 1.75 lakh phones would be given. Before coming to power in 2017, the Congress had promised to give free smartphones to youths in the state.
