Tamil Nadu today reported 5,834 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 3,08,649, while 118 fatalities pushed the death toll to 5,159. Active cases stood at 52,810 with 6,005 discharges from hospitals and in total 2,50,680 patients have recovered, a health department bulletin said. Of the fresh cases, Chennai has reported 986, the highest in the state and the three neighbouring districts of Chengelpet, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram together outnumbered the state capital with a combined tally of 1,080 infections.
India Expresses Interest in Obtaining Russian Vaccine | India is among the 20 countries that have expressed interest in obtaining the new coronavirus vaccine announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. Goa Covid-19 Cases | At least 415 persons tested positive for coronavirus infection in Goa, taking the coastal state's tally to 9,444, an official from the health department said. With the death of a 45-year-old man and five senior citizens, the toll in the state now stands at 86, the official said.
Southern States Continue Reporting High Caseloads | Southern states continued reporting high Covid-19 caseloads, the numbers being close to 25,000, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation with four of the most affected ones from the region - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.
Kerala Covid-19 Cases | Kerala continued to witness a spike in Covid-19 infections reporting 1,417 cases, including 36 health workers, as the death toll climbed to 120 with five more fatalities. As many as 1,426 people recovered from the infection today, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters.
Mankind Pharma Ties up with S Korean Co for Clinical Trials of Drug | Mankind Pharma said it has collaborated with South Korean firm Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co for conducting phase-I clinical trial of a novel formulation of Niclosamide for the treatment of Covid-19 patients in India. The trial is designed towards addressing the need for an investigation on this new formulation based on encouraging preclinical evidence for the treatment of Covid-19, Mankind Pharma said in a statement.
Covid-19 Patient in Hyderabad Kills Self | A 60-year old man undergoing treatment for Covid-19 in a private hospital in Hyderabad allegedly ended his life out of fear about the disease, police said. The man from Karimnagar district hanged himself in the washroom attached to his room in the hospital between 1 am and 2 am, a police official said.
Delhi Covid-19 Cases | Delhi reports 1,257 Covid-19 cases, 727 recoveries/discharged/migrated cases and eight deaths today. 'States Must Not Get Overawed by Increase in Daily Cases' | The Health Ministry said states should not get overawed by a "mere increase" in daily positive cases of Covid-19 and should keep pursuing the policy of aggressive testing, comprehensive tracing and tracking and efficient treatment of cases. Addressing a press briefing, Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said the active cases of COVID-19, which comprised 88.83 per cent of the total caseload on March 31, have reduced to 28.21 per cent as on date.
Karnataka to Work Towards Bringing Down Death Rate | Karnataka will take all steps to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suggestions to bring the Covid-19 spread under control, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said. The state has also placed several requests before the the Prime Minister including doubling of graduate and post graduate medical seats and setting up of liquid oxygen plants as part of Covid-19 management.
India's Single-day Count More than US, Brazil's in Last 7 Days: WHO | For the past seven days, India's single-day count of Covid-19 cases has been more than that of the US and Brazil, the two worst-hit nations in terms of infections, according to an analysis of WHO data. India, the third worst-hit nation in terms of infections, has also accounted for over 23 per cent of the cases and more than 15 per cent of the deaths reported worldwide between August 4-10, the data shows.
191 Jail Inmates Test +ve in UP's Basti | As many as 191 inmates of the district jail here were found Covid-19 positive, a senior official said. According to Ramesh Chandra, 374 inmates of the jail were tested through rapid antigen tests in a camp organised here on Monday, and of these 191 were found positive though they did not show any symptoms.
Efforts on to Prevent Second Wave: Thackeray | The Maharashtra government is striving to see there is no second wave of Covid-19 in the state, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said during a meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Thackeray also said hospitals will be set up in all districts of the state to control the epidemic, according to an official statement.
National Expert Group on Vaccine Admin to Meet Tomorrow | The government has constituted a National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration, which will meet tomorrow. Their terms of reference constitute all matters related to logistics of vaccines, ways to address issues of equity etc.This expert group will continue its engagement with all state governments and vaccine manufacturers in India: Health Ministry, on if there is a plan to tie-up with Russia to get vaccine.

The restriction on arrival of flights to the Kolkata Airport from six cities has been extended up to August 31, the airport said in a tweet today. The six cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Nagpur and Ahmedabad -- are coronavirus hotspots.
The successful implementation of containment strategy, aggressive testing coupled with standardised clinical management of critical patients have resulted in the rise of COVID-19 recovery rate to nearly 70% while the case fatality rate has fallen below 2%, said the Union Health Ministry today. With more patients recuperating and being discharged from hospitals and home isolation (in case of mild and moderate cases), the total recoveries have jumped to 15,83,489 with 47,746 patients getting discharged in a span of 24 hours, it said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a meeting with chief ministers of 10 states to discuss the Covid-19 situation as India recorded over 53,000 new cases in a span of 24 hours. With 53,601 new cases, India’s Covid-19 tally climbed to 22,68,675. In the last 24 hours, 871 additional deaths have been reported and the total number of fatalities has risen to 45,257. The states expected to be part of the conference are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. In his earlier interaction with chief ministers, PM Modi had rubbished speculations of imposition of a lockdown and asked all CMs to decide on the strategy to fight the pandemic.
Meanwhile, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that "green shoots of hope" are emerging at this point in the pandemic and added that all countries should remember it is never too late to turn the Covid-19 outbreak around."... I want to be clear, there are green shoots of hope and no matter where a country, a region, a city or a town is – it’s never too late to turn the outbreak around. India has reported more confirmed new cases than the United States and Brazil for seven consecutive days. The confirmed number of coronavirus cases in the world has reached 20 million. That's according to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University. Health officials believe the actual number is much higher, given testing limitations and the fact that as many as 40% of all those who are infected have no symptoms.
Noted Urdu poet Rahat Indori said on Tuesday that he tested positive for Covid-19. In a tweet in Hindi, he said that he got himself tested on Monday after he experienced initial symptoms of the disease.

The WHO said that there is no indication of there being seasonality with this virus. "This virus is still circulating and we know the majority of the population is still susceptible." the apex global health agency said.
