BOSTON --- Robert Stock became the latest pitcher summoned by the Red Sox on Tuesday.
The right-hander was recalled from the alternate site in Pawtucket and available out of the bullpen for the second of a four-game series with the Rays. Left-hander Jeffrey Springs was optioned to McCoy Stadium after taking the loss in Monday night’s 8-7 setback.
Stock is one of several signees off the waiver wire by Boston since Summer Camp broke in late July. The Phillies turned the 30-year-old loose as Opening Day approached, and he ultimately reached the big leagues for the third straight year. Stock made 42 appearances with the Padres over the last two seasons, pitching to a 4.11 earned-run average.
"A guy coming up with good stuff," Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. "Hopefully he gets that good stuff in the strike zone and where he wants it. He’s had success before in the major leagues."
Stock was solid for San Diego in 2018, working to a 2.50 ERA in 32 appearances. His lack of command resulted in a more difficult 2019 season, as Stock walked eight in just 10 games and 10 2/3 innings. He was also roughed up for 14 hits and 12 earned runs.
"He’s got big stuff," Red Sox pitching coach Dave Bush said. "He’s had some success in the past. He’s also had some times where he hasn’t been."
Stock made several appearances in simulated games at the alternate site, his last coming on Saturday. Stock struck out a pair and touched 100 mph on the McCoy radar gun. Springs allowed five hits and three earned runs to Tampa Bay in his latest struggle, raising his ERA through four appearances to 15.43.
