update: India recorded more than 50,000 cases in 24 hours, taking its tally of total cases to 2,271,034. As many as 45,383 have died from the disease. The five most-affected states by number of cases are Maharashtra (5,24,513), Tamil Nadu (296,901), Andhra Pradesh (227,860), Karnataka (178,087), and Delhi (1,46,134).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday noted that 10 states account for over 80 per cent of active Covid-19 cases, and asserted if the virus is defeated in these states, then the country will also emerge victorious in its fight against the pandemic.

At a video conference with chief ministers of these 10 states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, Modi said the recovery rate has gone up which, he added, meant that government efforts have proved to be effective. The Centre and states have been able to work as a team in the fight against Covid-19, he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said the country has registered the world's first Covid-19 vaccine.
