Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting at 11 am on Tuesday with the chief ministers of 10 states to take stock of the coronavirus situation.

Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh will attend the meeting.

This comes as India reported over 53,000 coronavirus cases in a single day on Tuesday, taking the total caseload registered so far above 22.68 lakh. According to fresh data on the health ministry’s website, India currently has 6,39,929 active cases as of Tuesday.

Of the 22,68,676 cases registered in India so far, there are nearly 6.4 lakh active cases while over 15 lakh people have recovered. India’s death toll has also gone up to 45,257 after 871 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Cases in India are now rising faster than the United States and Brazil, which are the two worst-affected countries in terms of caseload and deaths.

Even though the recovery rate is improving and the country is reporting few deaths as compared to other worst-affected nations, the sharp rise of coronavirus cases — especially in rural areas — has become a concern for the country's health authorities.

Many states Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are now witnessing a dramatic rise in cases, while cases are declining in initial hotspots like Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
