Delhi is 'slowly defeating coronavirus'; here's all you need to know about the Delhi COVID model

Even with strict social distancing measures, movement restrictions and lockdowns, the pandemic continues to ravage the health of people across the world. India, which remains the third worst-hit nation from the novel coronavirus, has already registered 22.6 lakh COVID cases till date. In this fight against the highly infectious disease, there seems to be a small glimmer of hope as active cases continue to decline in the national capital.

To acknowledge the same, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter and informed that over 90 per cent of coronavirus patients in Delhi have recovered and 7 per cent of the total cases are active. He also congratulated and lauded the efforts of Delhites in “slowly and steadily defeating coronavirus.”

He wrote, “Over 90% of Corona patients in Delhi have now recovered. Only 7% cases are active now. Slowly and steadily, the people of Delhi are defeating Corona. #DelhiModel”

The much-talked-about ‘Delhi Model’ to contain the virus spread primarily focuses on increasing the testing capacity, home quarantining patients with mild symptoms, containment zones, conducting sero surveys to assess the spread of the virus and inclusion of plasma therapy in treating critical coronavirus patients. Furthermore, aggressive contact tracing was also implemented to contain the viral infection.

After the remarkable recovery rates of the national capital, there are talks of replicating the successful Delhi Model to battle the novel coronavirus across the country.

Delhi CM had also thanked South Korean Ambassador to India Shin Bong-kil, after he lauded Delhi Model and congratulated the Delhi government on the efforts it is making to tackle the pandemic.

Shin Bong-kil appreciated the Delhi model and said, “I am very impressed with the Delhi model. The Korean model is three T’s – test, trace and treat. The Delhi model is test, home quarantine and is a very effective and wise measure. This works for India and the Delhi situation. The Delhi government’s achievement must be congratulated."

“Happy that our Delhi Model is being recognized across the globe. I want to thank South Korean Ambassador H.E. Shin Bong-Kil for his encouraging words. All nations coming together to defeat covid-19 is the need of the hour,” Kejriwal had noted.

As of now, Delhi has recorded 1,46,134 coronavirus cases and 4,131 deaths. While the number of daily coronavirus cases hovered over 1,000 between August 5 and 9, it again went down on August 10. The national capital reported 707 fresh cases yesterday as per the Delhi State Health Bulletin.

Even as things are looking up right now, the pandemic is far from over and this may just only be the first step in the right direction. We need to continue taking all the necessary precautions to contain the spread of the viral infection and especially prevent it from attacking the weak and the vulnerable. India is recording new coronavirus cases at an alarming rate and experts are worried that it may soon become the most impacted nation by the novel coronavirus, surpassing Brazil and the US.
