Mettur damSALEM: Public works department (PWD) officials at Mettur dam increased the discharge of water from 1,000 cusecs to 10,000 cusecs after the Stanley Reservoir’s water storage crossed 95 feet on Tuesday morning.
“Water level in the dam has increased nearly 30 feet in the last six days,” said a PWD official at the dam. The official said that they were expecting the water level in the dam to cross 100 feet on Wednesday.
The dam’s water level stood at 101.73 feet when Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami released water on June 12 for irrigation in delta districts. The dam’s water level dipped heavily as inflow was lower than the outflow. The water level was 64.20 feet on August 6.
“Due to the sudden inflow into the reservoir from Karnataka dams, water increased nearly 31 feet and reached 95.44 feet at 8 am on Tuesday,” the official said.
PWD officials checked the shutters to release water through the dam's left bank canal when the water level crosses 100 feet. “We have put greases and oil on the shutter ratchet wheels,” he added.
