Immigrant, 46, who had been locked up for four years dies in a detention centre in Melbourne

A man believed to be from New Zealand has died in immigration detention in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to the Melbourne International Transit Accommodation in Broadmeadows about 8.30am on Monday.

Police say the death of the 46-year-old is not being treated as suspicious.

It's believed the man had been in detention for four years.

'The matter has been referred for investigation to the appropriate agencies, including the Victorian Coroner,' Australian Border Force said in a statement.
