NEW DELHI: A head constable was killed after the Prakhar PCR vehicle he was patrolling in was rammed by a speeding Honda City being driven by a drunk youth returning home from a party. This is the second policeman to have died within a month.
The impact of the crash was such that the Mahindra Scorpio PCR toppled over and skidded almost 10-15 feet before coming to a stop.
In a rare instance, police have invoked the IPC sections of causing death due to negligence and culpable homicide against the driver, Tushar
(19), the son of a businessman based in Model Town.
The incident occurred around 1.30am on Tuesday when the PCR team, consisting of head constable Wazir Singh and constable Amit, were patrolling between Ring Road and Chhatra Marg.
Amit, in his statement to police, said the Honda City rammed their vehicle at a high speed while coming from Mall Road. At that time, the policemen were taking a turn at Khalsa College crossing. The police SUV was hit on its left side after which it tipped over. The vehicles skidded together for a short distance before resting against the footpath.
The constable crawled out of the vehicle and alerted his colleagues in the PCR. Firemen soon reached the spot and cut open the vehicle to pull out Singh. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Amit was admitted for treatment. Tushar is also said to be severely injured.
Singh’s family members, who stay in Sonipat, were later informed about the incident. His body was handed over to them after an autopsy. His son, Vinay, is also a policeman posted in Gurgaon. His younger son, Vineet, is preparing for the civil services examination. The head constable had joined Delhi Police in 1988.
A probe revealed that Tushar was partying with his friends till late at night. He then started to drive home despite being heavily drunk. He will be arrested once he recovers from his injuries. The year-old Honda City was found registered in the name of a family member.
