Hyundai Creta Compact SUV Crosses The 5 Lakh Sales Unit Mark In India

The Hyundai Creta was launched in July 2015, and in the last five years, the company has sold over 5 lakh units of the compact SUV. The second-gen model was launched in March 2020, and despite the lockdown, the Creta was the best-selling SUV in May, June & July 2020.

The Hyundai Creta, currently the country's best-selling SUV, has crossed the 5 lakh sales unit mark in India. Hyundai India launched the compact SUV in July 2015, which means in the last five years the South Korean carmaker has sold an average of one lakh Creta SUVs every year. The company launched the second-generation model in March 2020, and despite the Coronavirus pandemic and the resultant lockdown, Hyundai Creta managed to retain the top-spot among SUVs in May, June and July. Last month, in July 2020, the company sold 11,549 units of the new-gen Creta. The Made-In-India Hyundai Creta is also exported to 88 countries.

Commenting on the new sales milestone, Tarun Garg, Director, Sales, Marketing & Services, Hyundai Motor India, said, "With the 5 lakh sales mark, the Creta has set yet another benchmark in the industry, reaffirming a legacy of leadership in the SUV segment. At Hyundai Motor India we are continuously strengthening our portfolio with the best-in-segment features and technologically advanced products to make customers' life a happy life."

In the last five years, Hyundai has sold an average of one lakh Creta SUVs in India every year

Since its launch, the new-gen Hyundai Creta has garnered over 65,000 bookings in India, and 60 per cent of the total bookings have come for the diesel variants. The Hyundai Creta now also comes with the company BlueLink connected car technology, and the company had previously announced that 60 per cent of the SUV's total customers have opted for the variants with the BlueLink system. The system offers over 50 connectivity features and is only offered with higher variants like the SX and SX(O), showing that customers are ready to pay the higher premium for a connected SUV.

The Hyundai Creta now comes with a 10.25-inch screen and BlueLink connected car system with over 50 connectivity features.

Talking about the company strong SUV portfolio, Garg further added, "HMIL has also contributed strongly in the UV Segment with 4 Super Performer SUVs - Creta, Venue, Tucson, and Kona Electric registering sale of 34,212 Units (April to July 2020) showcasing customer acceptance of SUVs in the Hyundai portfolio leading to higher brand affinity."

While the new milestone is certainly encouraging, we must tell you that these are wholesale numbers for the Creta, and not retail. The Federation Of Automobile Dealers Association's (FADA) says that dealerships have been running at a low inventory level as transit came to a halt during the lockdown period and haven't picked up the pace yet, post the lockdown. July is also the month when the lockdown was eased off generously in a bid to facilitate sales. In those regards, Hyundai India despatched 41,300 units in July while dealers retailed 29,413 units, a difference of 40.41 per cent. This gap will also reflect in the Creta's retail numbers.

The Hyundai Creta is currently offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a 1.4-litre GDI Turbo petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual gearbox along with 3 optional automatic transmissions - iVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission), 7-seed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), and a 6-speed torque converter.
