THANE: Middle-aged men seem to be more susceptible to getting infected by Covid-19 while among women, it is the elderly lot that has been more prone to contracting the virus, reveals a data analysis by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
An age and gender-wise data classification shows that overall, men account for the maximum number of Covid infection cases at 13,026 while women account for only 7,944 numbers in Thane.
Of these, men in the 31-40 age group account for the highest volume at 2,762 or nearly 21% while among the women in the same age group seem to be more careful or not exposed to the virus contamination, shows the data. Meanwhile, the elderly lot above 60+ seem to be the most vulnerable with nearly 1,489 or around 19% in Thane infected while the elderly men in the same age group also show less ratio of infection till date.
Experts said men in the 31-40 age groups were more susceptible to infection. Dr Sushil Indoria who operates a Covid hospital in Thane says, "The need to stay outdoors for this age group due to work commitments or meeting domestic needs is high thus leaving them exposed to the virus. Luckily, even if they are affected the most, the recovery is often the quickest. In contrast, most elderly women suffer from low immunity levels and may get infected faster," he said.
Dr Deepak Baid, Association of Medical Consultants said the possibility of youngsters who were mostly asymptomatic unknowingly carrying the infection home was possibly higher.
