WESTPORT — The dining room at the Galley Grille at White’s of Westport will reopen Wednesday after a car crash Sunday night damaged the entrance to the restaurant.
Charlie Fellows, restaurant operations general manager said a vehicle that was reportedly traveling east on Route 6 crossed over the westbound lane into the parking lot of the restaurant where it crashed through 3,000 pound jersey barriers bordering an outdoor dining tent and into a planter and a column holding up a structure over the entrance to the building. The restaurant closes at 8 p.m. and the crash occurred about 9:30 p.m., according to information supplied to Fellows. “Thank god there was no one out there at that time,” he added.
By Monday afternoon, the rubble and debris from the crash was cleared away from the front of the restaurant. In addition to the damage to that structure, the crash also damaged the tent of the outdoor dining area, he said.
Fellows said they will be reopening the dining room at the Galley Grille on Wednesday, but they were holding off on outdoor dining pending repairs to the tent. He did not want to estimate cost of the damage to the restaurant.
Information about the driver or the accident was not immediately available from the Westport Police Monday afternoon.
