Monday is very important for the politics of the Northeast. Voting on the motion of confidence is to be held in the Manipur Legislative Assembly today. This floor test will decide the fate of the BJP-led coalition government. Chief Minister of Manipur N.K. Biren Singh moved the motion of confidence in the Assembly last Friday.
Actually, there has been a political tussle in Manipur for a long time. Some ministers and MLAs of the BJP coalition government had resigned. The incident created a stir in the politics of the state. According to sources, the Chief Minister had called a meeting of all the MLAs of the ruling coalition to discuss Monday's strategy. However, the Speaker did not attend the meeting.
Congress has issued a whip to all its MLAs for voting on the trust vote in the assembly. Whip has asked all members to be present in the House. BJP Chief Whip and Minister T. Biswajit Singh have also issued a whip to the party MLAs to attend the session and vote in favor of the motion of confidence.
BJP state president S Tikendra Singh said that he was confident that the government would win the trust vote by securing the support of more than 30 members. However, the coalition government has a strength of only 29 members in the House. The Congress had moved a no-confidence motion against the BJP government on 28 July.
The current strength of the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly is 53 including the Speaker. Four MLAs have been disqualified under the anti-defection law. While three MLAs have resigned. The Congress currently has 24 MLAs, while the ruling BJP alliance has 29 MLAs. BJP has 18 MLAs. At the same time, NPP has four, four members of NPF and one each of the TMC Lok Janshakti Party. Apart from this, there is an independent MLA.
