16-day-old Nagpur boy youngest to die of Covid-19 in Vidarbha

Nagpur: A shocker came for Vidarbha region on Saturday when a 16-day-old boy from Nagpur died of Covid-19 at GMCH. The boy is the youngest Covid-19 victim of Vidarbha region.
Doctors at GMCH informed that the boy was born at GMCH 15 days ago. At the time of delivery, his mother tested for Covid-19 as per protocol. She was tested negative. The boy was born with several serious complications and was very weak. Along with heart problems, he had hydrocephalus (a build-up of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain) and other complications. He was immediately shifted to NICU after birth. As the boy was to be treated with Neuro surgery, his Covid-19 test was also conducted as per protocol on August 7. The boy tested positive on Saturday. His condition deteriorated and he died of sudden cardiac arrest.
Apart from this boy, Nagpur reported 22 more Covid-19 deaths on Saturday. Yavatmal reported 3 deaths, while Akola, Amravati and Washim reported 1 death each, taking the day’s Covid-19 death toll of Vidarbha to 30 and total death toll to 617. Out of these, 230 have been reported in first 8 days of August.
A record-breaking 1314 new Covid-19 cases were reported from the region on Saturday. Highest 812 of these came from Nagpur district. These include 701 from Nagpur city (NMC area) and 109 from Nagpur district (ZP area).
Surge in cases is now visible in all parts of Vidarbha. Nagpur’s 812 was followed by Yavatmal (101), Amravati (77), Buldhana (72), Akola (64), Gondia (58), Chandrapur (56), Washim (34), Bhandara (18), Gadchiroli (18) and Wardha (4). Total Covid-19 cases reached 22162 on Saturday.
Number of recovered patients also increased on Saturday. Total 611 patients recovered. These include Nagpur (209), Buldhana (106), Yavatmal (99), Gadchiroli (50), Gondia (41), Akola (29), Chandrapur (28), Amravati (21), and Washim (21). With this, 13381 patients have recovered out of total 22162 in region. Recovery rate is around 60% but this is less than Maharashtra state’s recovery rate which is more than 65% and national average which is around 67%.
