Storage increasing steadily after inflow into the Stanley reservoir rose to 45,000 cusec on Saturday

Since 1.53 lakh cusecs of excess water has been released from Karnataka owing to heavy rain in the catchment areas which is expected to lash till August 11, the Mettur is set to receive 25 TMC more water in addition to the present storage of 34.26 TMC.
After the heavy rainfall in both Karnataka and Kerala, the major dams like Kabini and KSR reaching its full capacity, the excess water of around 1.53 lakh cusecs was released to the Cauvery that reached Billigundu on Friday.
Around 36,000 cusecs flowed in initially and later the flow increased to 39,000 cusecs and has reached 45,000 cusecs on Saturday morning.
The water flowed into Hogenakkal in Tamil Nadu and later around 40,000 cussecs reached the Stanley reservoir at Mettur on Friday evening.
Since rainfall has been steady and heavy, the water flow was stepped up to 45,000 cusecs on Saturday morning that increased to 54,000 cusecs by evening.
Official sources said that the Mettur level stood at 64.20 feet on Thursday evening while it increased to 70.05 feet.
Since there was heavy rain in the catchment areas continued, the flow of water increased in just two days and on Saturday evening it stood at 71.80 feet. As the forecast is of more rain till August 11, the flow can increase further and the Mettur would have a strong storage of water with level reaching 100 feet.
The officials at Mettur said that 10,000 cusecs of water was released for the Cauvery delta irrigation till 10 days back.
However, the Delta region received moderate to heavy rain fall in the last week of July, the release of water was reduced to 7000 cusecs and 3000 cusecs on August 1 and then was reduced to 1000 cusecs.
Since the inflow was heavy and the outflow was reduced, at least 25 TMC more water would be stored in Mettur, officials said.
