Gurugram: 55 tankers fined in 25 days for dumping sewage in the open

GURUGRAM: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has issued challans to 55 septic tankers since July 14 for dumping untreated sewage in the city. Of them, the civic body has recovered fines from 25 tankers. The civic body has issued challans worth nearly Rs 13.75 lakh and recovered fines amounting to Rs 6.25 lakh so far. Officials said that the MCG is planning to issue more challans in the coming days. “This untreated waste has to be dumped into the sewage treatment plants (STPs). However, these tankers illegally dump it near drains and nullahs, We have to keep a check on this,” said a MCG official.
Officials said that after they started catching these private septic tankers dumping untreated sewage in Gurugram, they started dumping it in Manesar. The Delhi civic body took an NOC from GMDA and started catching the tankers in Manesar.
“Our enforcement teams with more than 100 workers have started keeping a vigil on the tankers dumping untreated sewage following the NGT’s directions to keep a check on illegal dumping of untreated sewage in drains. Earlier, nearly 50 tankers would dump untreated sewage every day on an average in Gurugram but since we have started challaning, the numbers have come down,” said Hariom Attri, joint commissioner-headquarter, MCG.
The enforcement teams make videos when the tankers dump waste. The video acts as a proof for challaning tankers. These tankers are illegally dumping untreated sewage in Kasan Behrampur, Kankrola village, etc. “We are going to be stricter now in a way that the tanker will be released only after the penalty is recovered from the tanker drivers. Challans won’t be kept pending now and tankers illegally dumping the sewage will have to deposit fines on the spot,” said Attri.
