Hurricanes co-captain TJ Perenara believes that unless changes are made, Super Rugby Aotearoa is likely to be a one-hit-wonder.

The All Blacks scrumhalf has thoroughly enjoyed the competition between the five New Zealand franchises, which concludes next weekend.

But Perenara feels it isn’t "sustainable" and hopes alterations are made to make it better for both players and supporters in the longer-term.

"The footy is awesome, the content is really good and the games are always close. It’s like Test match footy every time [but] I’m not sure it’s sustainable playing New Zealand teams back to back with only two byes," he told Stuff on Friday.

"I’d like to see more teams added or a different schedule. I really enjoy the competition itself, I just don’t think the way it’s structured at the moment is sustainable. Coming out of Covid and into a competition like this which is really good footy for people to watch and awesome for us to play, is exciting to be part of but, going forward, I think there will be some adjustments."

Indeed, Perenara has been racking up the minutes for the 'Canes in the competition as he starts at scrumhalf and switches to flyhalf late on.

Due to the Covid-19 uncertainty around travel, it remains unclear what future changes could be made to Super Rugby and while Perenara is sympathetic of the difficult circumstances the decision makers are under, he’s determined to make the best of the situation in a collaborative manner.

"The players will talk with the people who are putting those competitions together and do what’s best for the players and the people watching the games. We need to keep the integrity of the game and make sure it is quality football as well," he added.
