Evening session in a nutshell: Ben Stokes took two late wickets to help drag England back into the first Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford in Manchester. Pakistan, on top for most of this match, were 137/8 in their second innings at stumps on the third day -- a lead of 244 runs. Stokes, who didn't bowl in the third Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford last month because of a quad injury, took 2-11 in 20 balls. He struck with just his eighth delivery of the match when he had Mohammad Rizwan lbw for 27 on umpire's call. And the paceman struck again before stumps when he had tailender Shaheen Afridi caught fending at a short ball. But leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who had earlier taken four wickets, was still there at stumps on 12 not out. Pakistan are still relatively well-placed. Only twice have a team chased more than 200 to win in the fourth innings of a Test at Old Trafford, with England making 294-4 against New Zealand in 2008 and 231-3 against the West Indies at the Manchester ground in 2004.

PAK 137/7End of 40th over: OUT! Wicket on the last ball of the over. Stuart Broad strikes from the other end. Traps Shadab Khan in front for 15. PAK 33/2End of 13th over: A tidy over from Jofra Archer comes to an end. Just a single from it. Both Both Abid (20*) and Azhar (8*) are looking in no hurry at the moment, trying to get their eyes in. Ben Stokes dropped Abid at second slip off James Anderson just before the break. Earlier, Yasir (4-66) was the stand-out performer with the ball during the England innings as he produced prodigious turn on a wearing wicket that will have him licking his lips for more when England bat last.
End of 9th over: A dot ball from James Anderson to finish the over and umpires have called for a tea break. Overall a great session for Pakistan but they will be hurt by the wicket of Shan Masood, who departed for a duck.

The home side still trail Pakistan's first innings total by 167 runs with the visitors into the bowlers as Chris Woakes (15*) looks to stabilise the innings with a battling Jos Buttler (38* from 106 balls). Pope (62) had looked relatively assured as he moved to his fifth Test half-century. However, the threat from Pakistan’s seamers is ever-present and 17-year-old Naseem Shah got a delivery to rise sharply off a length, catching the bat and providing a catch for Shadab Khan in the gully. Buttler rode his luck early in the session but found some scoring shots in the half-hour before lunch, picking up his own tempo and that of the innings. England resumed the third day on 92 for four having recovered from 12 for three late on the second day. The decision to select an extra seamer with all-rounder Ben Stokes unlikely to bowl in the Test due to a quad injury has seen Woakes coming in at number seven, providing a long tail for the home side.

Hello and welcome to TimesofIndia.com's live coverage of Day 3 of the first Test between England and Pakistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester.RECAP, DAY 2:England suffered a dramatic top-order collapse that saw Ben Stokes out for a duck after Shan Masood's brilliant century established a strong position for Pakistan in the first Test at Old Trafford. The hosts were 92-4 at stumps on the second day, after slumping to 12-3, in reply to Pakistan's first innings 326 that featured opener Masood's Test-best 156.
Ollie Pope defied Pakistan to be 46 not out, with Jos Buttler unbeaten on 15. But England were still 234 runs behind with no more specialist batsmen left.
It took towering left-armer Shaheen Afridi just four balls to have Rory Burns lbw before Mohammad Abbas struck twice in quick succession. Dom Sibley was plumb lbw before the accurate Abbas bowled Stokes, standing well out of his ground, with a superb ball that clipped the top of off-stump.
England were now 12-3, with the cheers of Pakistan's reserve players on the hotel balconies overlooking the ground trying to compensate for the absence of their passionate fans in what is a behind closed doors series because of the coronavirus.
Joe Root, the England captain, and Pope kept Pakistan at bay with a stand of exactly 50. But leg-spinner Yasir Shah then had Root, who made a struggling 14 off 58 balls, well caught by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan after the skipper edged an intended cut.
