UEFA Champions League 2020, Bayern Munich vs Chelsea Highlights: Bayern Munich progressed to the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League after defeating Chelsea 4-1 in the second leg of their tie, winning 7-1 on aggregate, at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday.
Robert Lewandowski started the rout against a weakened Chelsea side in the 9th minute itself from the penalty spot. The Polish talisman then set up Ivan Perisic for Bayern’s second before Tammy Abraham offered the faintest of hope to the visitors with an away goal. In the second half, Chelsea were kept at bay easily as Bayern scored two — Corentin Tolisso with a volley and Lewandowski again, with a towering header.
Bayern, who will face Barcelona in their quarter-final next Friday, became the first team to start a UEFA Champions League campaign with eight consecutive wins in the competition’s current format, scoring 31 goals in the process.
Here's the line up for the quarter-finals then:
12 August (20:00 BST) Atalanta v Paris St-Germain (Estadio da Luz, Lisbon)
13 August (20:00 BST) RB Leipzig v Atletico Madrid (Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon)
14 August (20:00 BST) Barcelona v Bayern Munich (Estadio da Luz, Lisbon)
15 August (20:00 BST) Manchester City v Lyon (Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon)
Despite all the heart and all the verve, Chelsea came up short against a mighty Bayern Munich, who are considered to be favourites of the competition. A brace from Lewandowski, and couple of goals from Perisic and Tolisso helped the German giants inflict a 7-1 win aggregate defeat to Chelsea in the end. That's their eighth successive UCL victory, scoring 31 goals in the process. On the other hand, Barcelona go through to the quarters with a 4-2 aggregate win over Napoli after a 3-1 win in the second leg at Camp Nou.
That same man again, and this time with a towering far post header from Odriozola's cross. Chelsea too slow, too defeated. Lewandowski's 53rd goal of the season and 13th of his UEFA Champions League campaign.
Javi Martinez is on for Gnabry. Flick trying to shut down shop here. Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud is on for Chelsea, replacing the goalscorer Abraham. Into the final 10 minutes now.
THE FRENCHMAN SCORES! Tolisso is waved on through as Chelsea's defence watch a cross come in from Lewandowski and the substitute gleefully sidefoots in under no pressure. All but over for Chelsea now.
Alvaro Odriozola and Corentin Tolisso are on for Kimmich and Thiago respectively.
After Lewandowski's snapshot skimmed past the Chelsea goal, Thiago's free header from a corner is denied by Willy Caballero. Alaba's subsequent shot is straight at the Chelsea goalkeeper. Chelsea are on the backfoot a bit.
Niklas Sule and Philippe Coutinho come on for Boateng and Perisic.
Neither side made any change at half time, and the play resumed with Chelsea playing with more vigour. Both sides had couple of chances, for Mount and Perisic, but both times the goalkeepers secured the ball. Meanwhile, Hudson-Odoi's nudge from behind injures Boateng and Bayern are now playing with ten men after the defender limps off with the medical team.
An entertaining half comes to an end, dominated entirely by Bayern Munich who got two early goals through Lewandowski and Perisic. Chelsea had a disallowed goal after Hudson-Odoi had curled an effort from outside of the box, but Abraham scored their first of the tie just before the half time. Still a long way to go for Lampard's side as they need four more goals to progress to quarters. On the other hand, Barcelona are leading 4-2 against Napoli on aggregate after Lenglet, Messi and Suarez scored for the home side. Napoli's Insigne scored from the penalty spot right towards the end of the first half.
CHELSEA GET ONE! In one of their forays into the Bayern half, Hudson-Odoi gets past Kimmich with his blistering pace and crosses inside the box to find a Chelsea man, but Neuer palms it in the way of Abraham, who just taps it in.
Emerson is booked for a foul on Goretzka down the right wing. Frustration at its peak.
Chelsea are looking for ways to get closer to the Bayern goal but it has been overhit crosses and wayward longballs so far. Apart from that Hudson-Odoi wonder-strike which was ultimately cancelled, the visitors are yet to take control of the game as Bayern are always breaking ahead looking for a third goal of the tie. A story of utter domination tonight.
One minute, Chelsea celebrate a brilliant curling effort from outside of the box by the young Hudson-Odoi... the next, Lampard reacts angrily after VAR ruled the goal offside for Abraham, who had played the pass to the winger.
AND IT'S DOUBLE THE TROUBLE! In a breathtaking counter attack by the Bavarians, Lewandowski finds himself in space right outside the box and picks out the unmarked Perisic in the right wing, who picks his spot all too easily.
Chelsea are struggling to get out of their own half as Bayern Munich go on the hunt for another, Thomas Muller flashing an effort just over the bar. Frank Lampard's side need to score four goals tonight to progress.
Barcelona's Clement Lenglet scores with a free header from an Ivan Rakitic corner to give his side the lead! Barcelona are going through to the quarters with a 2-1 lead.
And of course! Robert Lewandowski scores his 12th Champions League goal of the season with a calm penalty to Caballero's left. The Polish international's 52nd goal of the season!
