In first 7 months of year, crime in Ghaziabad dips by 50%

GHAZIABAD: Crime in the district has gone down by almost 50%, stated data on cases registered between January 1 and July 31 this year. The data shared by the Ghaziabad police shows fewer crimes compared to the corresponding period in 2019.

According to the data, 10,494 cases of crime were reported in 19 police stations of Ghaziabad during the first seven months in 2019, while 2020 saw just 5,490 criminal cases during the same period.
As many as 65 cases of loot were registered in the previous year while in 2020 only 14 cases were reported so far.
Vehicle thefts also came down from 2,297 cases in 2019 to 496 in the first six months of 2020. Police have also reported a decline in cases of crime against women in the district. Police said rape cases have reduced from 53 until July last year to just 14 this year. Besides, there has also been a slight decline in cases of dowry death. In 2019, 24 cases of dowry death were reported while this year only 19 have been reported. As compared to 2019, murder cases too, have decreased from 58 to 31 this year. The cases of attempt to murder also went down by 61% this year as compared to 2019. In seven months of 2020, only 35 cases have been registered under Indian Penal Code Section 307 (attempt to murder) while in 2019, 57 cases were reported. Police attributed the decrease to the lockdown as people stayed indoors.
Ghaziabad police also claimed to have reined in various gangs, who were involved in selling the illicit liquor.
SSP Kalanidhi Naithani said that the police have seized property worth Rs 6 crore of liquor mafia, Ravi and another Krishanpal Yadav's property worth of Rs 2 crore this year. “I have also made four crime control teams (two for city and two for rural) under the supervision of SP (city) and SP (rural). Even Ghaziabad police have opened the history sheets of 340 criminals during the first seven months of this year,” he added. “Ghaziabad police also arrested 13,644 criminals who were absconding in different cases,” Naithani added.
