Mangaluru: Bajpe police of Mangaluru City arrested five vehicle-lifters and seized seven two-wheelers costing about Rs 5 lakh from them on Thursday.
During a routine check at 4pm, the police intercepted the youths riding on two bikes. They were quizzed further when they failed to provide vehicle documents. A quick investigation revealed that they were part of a gang involved in stealing bikes from places like Eshwarakatte, near MCC Bank, Yedapadavu of Bajpe police limits, Panjinamogaru of Kavoor police limits and Jokatte of Panambur police station limits.
The accused are Vijaya alias Vijaya Bhovi alias Anjaneya alias Anju, 23, from Surathkal; Pradeep Poojary alias Pradi alias Chethan, 27, from Ullaibettu; Abhijith, 26, from Mulky; Rakshith Kulal, 22, from Katipala; and Sudeesh Nair alias Sudeesh K K alias Munna, 20, from Bantwal.
They had a history of bike-theft cases in various police limits of Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada district. While Vijaya is an accused in a ganja-peddling case, Pradeep was involved in a murder case. The rest have dacoity and assault cases registered against them.
During interrogation, they revealed that they had conspired to rob a jewellery shop opposite Anjaneya Temple in Moodbidri.
