Monsoon mayhem in Karnataka: Malnad districts worst-hit

MYSURU: Rain, flood and landslides continue to batter the normal life across the malnad region of Karnataka. Following heavy rainfall on Thursday night, floods and landslides were reported from several parts of Kodagu and Chikkamagalur districts.
The inflow in the river Cauvery was 48,956 cusecs at 6 am. It was 43,667 at 6 pm on Thursday. Similarly 50,600 cusecs of water is being released from the Kabini dam to river Kapila causing flood in the downstream areas.
In Kodagu, all the rivers and local streams including Cauvery, Lakshmana Tirtha continue to flow above the danger mark. Flood water converted Bhagamandala, a famous temple town into an island with all the roads connecting this famous temple submerged in the flood water. The flood water entered into the famous Bhagandeshwara temple in the town.
Search operations resume: meanwhile, in Talacauvery, the search operations for the five missing priests of the famous Talacauvery temple resumed. The Public Works Department, NDRF team, and the local police and fire and emergency services department personnel resumed the operations by clearing the road connecting the incident site.
In Chikkamagalur, floods and landslides were reported from Charmadi ghat area, Koppa, Kalasa and NR Pura. The vehicle movement on the Charmadi ghat stopped due to the fear of more landslides.
Sringeri-Mangaluru road is blocked in Sringeri due to the Tunga flood water. In Sringeri, another famous temple town of Karnataka, Tunga river flood water entered into several houses causing a huge loss.
In Shivamogga also rain continued. In Hosanagar, Varada river water entered into tens of paddy fields causing a huge loss to the farmers.
