A suspect, who allegedly shot a George traffic law enforcement officer, is under police guard after he, himself, was shot during a chase by police.

The suspect was traced and then spotted on the N2 by the police's specialised unit, who then diverted to a nearby railway line close to an industrial site, according to police spokesperson Colonel Malcolm Potjie.

"A shooting ensued in which the suspect was wounded in his right arm and left knee," said Potjie.

He said the police also found two firearms, with loaded magazines, in his possession and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Potjie said the individual, who appears to be in his 30s, is currently receiving medical attention and is under police guard.

He will be appearing in the George Magistrate's court on Tuesday, 11 August, once he has been charged.

"He faces charges of attempted murder, theft of a firearm, the illegal  possession of firearms and ammunition," said Potjie.

Earlier on Friday, the suspect was pulled over by a female traffic law enforcement officer on the bridge in Beach Road, which crosses the N2 near Pacaltsdorp in George.

When the female officer approached the vehicle, he overpowered and disarmed her, and then took her service pistol.

She was shot in the process, and taken to hospital.
