Air India Plane Crash: At least 15 people were killed after an Air India Express plane with 190 on board from Dubai skidded off the runway and broke in two while landing at Kerala's Kozhikode on Friday amid heavy rain, the police said. Among those killed were the two pilots of Flight IX-1344, authorities said. Four people are still stuck inside, the Kerala Police chief said.

Most on board have been evacuated and at least 112 injured have been taken to hospital, authorities said. There were 174 passengers, 10 Infants, two pilots and four cabin crew members on board the aircraft.

Plane Skidded Off Because Of Heavy Rain, Says Kerala Minister
An Air India Express plane with 191 people skidded off the runway while landing at Kerala's Kozhikode on Friday and split into pieces. A pilot has died, said BJP MP KJ Alphons, and many passengers have suffered severe injuries.

All passengers have been evacuated, said Forest Minister K Raju to NDTV.

The incident took place at 7.41 PM. The plane skidded because of heavy rain and hit a wall, splitting into pieces, Mr Raju said.

"It is very serious. Rescue operations are on, first aid is being given at the aerodrome," he said. Read

Wing Commander Deepak Vasant Sathe, one of the two pilots of the Air India Express plane that skidded off the runway while landing and broke into pieces at Kerala's Kozhikode on Friday, is among the 11 who died. Flight Tracker Site Indicates Plane Tried To Land Twice At Kerala Airport
A popular global flight tracker website indicates that the Air India Express plane that skidded on the runway at Kerala's Kozhikode tried to land at least twice at the tabletop airport.

Flightradar24, a Swedish firm that shows real-time commercial flight tracking information on a map, indicated that the Boeing 737 NG that came from Dubai with 190 people on board tried to land twice.

Calicut airport is a "tabletop" airport, junior External Affairs Minister V Muraleedharan tweeted. A tabletop runway is a runway on the top of a plateau or hill with one or both ends adjacent to a steep elevation, which drops into a gorge. Such an airport presents a challenging condition for landing.

Rescue Operation Underway:NDRF chief
NDRF chief SN Pradhan told NDTV that rescue operations are on in full swing in Kerala.

"Whole idea is to take the passengers to safety. 24 or more than that ambulances, as per one of my officers were told, have reached. Doctors have also reached," SN Pradhan said.

"There's waterlogging everywhere. In fact, the land plane skidded is filled with water. I think we are equipped for it. We will be working as civil aviation directs us," he added.

Air India Express Dubai-Kozhikode Flight Skids Off Runway, 184 Onboard
An Air India Express plane with 191 people on board from Dubai skidded off the runway while landing at Kerala's Kozhikode on Friday. Rescue operations are underway.

First images from the site showed the aircraft completely broken up with debris strewn over the runway and beyond.

The incident took place amid very heavy rainfall in the area around 7:40 pm.
