UEFA Champions League 2020, Manchester City vs Real Madrid Highlights: Manchester City progressed to the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League on Friday after defeating Real Madrid 2-1 at home with an aggregate of 4-2 over the course of two legs.
City started off brilliantly with an 8th-minute goal from Raheem Sterling after a Raphael Varane mistake. Although Karim Benzema brought the visitors level with a 28th-minute header past Ederson, it didn’t prove to be enough. In the second half, Varane gifted the ball to Gabriel Jesus in the 68th minute who then chipped Thibaut Courtois to take the game out of the reach of the 13-time winners.
Despite Ronaldo's brace, Maurizio Sarri's Juventus are knocked out because of the away goals rule after ending the tie on 2-2. Depay's (away goal) opener from the spot proved to be crucial for Lyon as they progress to quarters to face Manchester City.
FULL TIME! With a 4-2 aggregate, Pep Guardiola has managed to hand Zidane his first-ever knockout loss. Despite all of their attacking prowess, Real looked quite clueless without the presence of their captain and with the mistakes of their star defender Varane. Sterling and Jesus' goals were more than enough to seal the memorable victory.
Triple change for Real -- Lucas Vazquez, Fede Valverde and Luka Jovic are on for Carvajal, Modric and Hazard.
David Silva is on for Raheem Sterling here. Pep is crowding the midfield here.
Real Madrid have been sub-par in the second half as they lost the edge that they had towards the end of the first half. Manchester City have bossed the last 10 minutes or so and more so with the inclusion of Bernardo Silva in the midfield in place of Foden.
CITY GET THEIR SECOND! There's the defensive mistake and there's the goal. Varane failed to get the ball out of danger with his first defender, and then he heads it back to Courtois but Gabriel Jesus chases the back pass and dinks it over Courtois to get the two-goal aggregate lead back again. Zidane tries to motivate his players.
Where there is Ronaldo, there is a way! Cristiano Ronaldo does it all himself in Turin as he picks it up on the right wing and scores a swerving shot from 25-ish yards with his left foot. They need just one more goal!
Real Madrid have changed things up here as they are yet to get some control in this half. Marco Asensio is on now for Rodrygo for Real Madrid.
Quite an open game here in Manchester now as Sterling misses a chance the previous minute and Benzema has a go at Ederson from outside of the box the next. Both teams are aware that the next goal will define the tie. Still stuck at 1-1.
Manchester City have started really well in the second half as Sterling made his way into the penalty box first, and then he again found himself in space for a De Bruyne through ball, but he smashes it wide with his left foot. Bright.
Etihad has witnessed a brilliant half of football tonight as it's all square at half-time. Sterling gave the hosts an early lead after a Varane error, but Real soon woke up from their slumber and brought themselves back into the game with a Benzema header from a Rodrygo cross. If Real score two more, City would need to score two to progress because of away goals rule. All to play for now!
While the end-to-end football in Manchester is keeping everyone on the edge of their seat, Ronaldo has equalised for Juventus from the penalty spot. The Old Lady need two more now.
Real have been a real nuisance for the hosts in the last 15 minutes as Hazard and Benzema are getting more and more into the game. But City are trying to slow done the tempo here. The game's finely balanced.
REAL EQUALISE! And it's that man again. Real Madrid were looking in control of their own destiny for quite some time now. This time, Rodrygo, the teenager, dribbles past Cancelo and Gundogan and lobs a nice cross towards the centre and Benzema outjumped both Laporte and Fernandinho to head it down low and past Ederson. Game on!
Real try to make their way back into the game as Benzema has his shot saved brilliantly by Ederson. Hazard makes his way from the left and plays a nice ball to Benzema between Fernandinho and Laporte. Ederson always aware.
It's all Sterling here at Etihad as he picks the ball at the right hand side and dribbles past Mendy and Militao and makes his way inside the box. But there was Casemiro with a finely timed sliding tackle. Real looking shaky here.
Oh so close! Guardiola is animated on the sidelines, as Sterling find himself in acres of space in the right half-space and shoots from distance. Courtois was at full stretch but the shot was just over. Real looking really distraught here.
In Turin, Memphis Depay has doubled the pain for Juventus as he scores from the penalty spot. Juventus now need three goals to progress to quarters.
